Spring 2008 Survey

"Please provide any other comments you have about ClassTech rooms, their support, or classroom technology in general."

You're doing great. Thank you!
Would like to capture audio and vidio
What are clickers?
We need a camera and microphone to capture students in classroom for remote presentations by professor, such as when using eluminate. Students do not care to see me, but they want me to see them so that when they raise their hands I can recognize them. Some times the TA is too busy looking at the screen to see the class. We also need writing tablets that will capture content and save it for the class. Much discussion centers around what is written on the white board, which is not available for capture.
We have audio/projected content capability in all of our department supported and 110 classrooms.
Used clickers in my classroom - ClassTech helped a lot
Use depends on guaranteed availability. I can't build these into a class if I wont get such a classroom.
There should be more ClassTech rooms -- every room should have these basic elements. It IS the 21st century after all.
There are times when I would find it quite advantageous to have a second screen, so that I could project two sources at once.
The only thing that seems to be missing is a laser pointer. If one could be included with the system (obviously in such a way that people don't walk off with it), this would be great.
The new wireless mics installed this year consume batteries very rapidly (partially because some user fail to power off when finished, I'm sure). Not sure if much can be done about that--whether more efficient hardware is available, etc., but I thought I'd mention it. Also, the projector image does not fill the entire screen in this room. Before the last projector "upgrade" a few semesters ago, the image used to fill the screen. It would be great if it could be set to do that again.
The log out routine is still not working properly. I have to hit cancel and OK many times before I can exit my unity account on the ClassTech computers.
The light switches in some rooms are behind the projector screens, which is very inconvenient. The white boards in many rooms are too small.
the computer in this class room seemed much slower (perhaps older) than those in other classroom. The application launcher for software programs was slow and in launching ArcGIS delayed class a few times.
The classroom capture (Podcast) failed frequently. HelpDesk and technicians were responsive and nice but unable to help when the Podcast server was down. My class is after 5:00 in the evening. Need to distribute support for the Podcast lecture capture or allow me to install software for an alternative classroom capture system.
The alignment between the projector and the screen in Jordan Rm 1220 varied from day to day. Very often either the bottom or top of the projected material was cut off. This was an ongoing frustration. With the help of a classtech student in the class we would the projector on day only to find it out of alignment the next class. I am using clickers now with Turning Point 2008 installed on my laptop and a USB receiver.
Thanks so much for having a wired mouse in there to use when the batteries are dead on the other one.
speakers on class room system were inadequate
sounds like the live capture could be useful for recording student teaching. that's what makes me interested in it at this stage touch screen controls generally work better than the prior switch station, but see my reboot/projector issue above
Please replace the doc cam in EB 1 1011.
Overall, great resources-- I integrate a lot of technology in my lectures now.
On two separate occasions there were problems with the filter and thus, the slides could not be shown for the lecture. I know there are regular maintenance checks but, could these be a little bit more frequent?
Not really your problem, but the arbitrary switch of clickers last semester was incredibly disruptive, and the new clickers have extremely poor reliability.
Need video or a web cam available to transmit to online students.
need more classtech rooms on campus. to stay a modern university all/most should have these features.
My use of technology is limited, but I have what I need, and I get the support I need when I need it. Keep up the good work.
My only complaints are that it seems that the projector has to be turned off and then back on if the person lecturing before you uses their laptop. Toggling, etc does not seem to work. Not a huge deal, just takes time. Thanks.
Keep up the good work. You have converted the campus in a remarkably short decade !
Keep up the good work
i've been thrilled with the equipment, it's maintenance, and the help I've received in the past.
It's fantastic when it works, frustrating when it doesn't. It's more helpful if a Tech can come to the classroom and fix the problem immediately. Otherwise the class misses out on an important activity. The Techs are all very nice and helpful.
It is very helpful for teaching a class. It is easier to deliver the material in an efficient manner. I usually show short DVDs to demonstrate processes difficult to explain. Utube is becoming a good source for instructional videos as well.
It is very good to know that the equipment will be there and be in good working order for each class. I can recall hauling an overhead projector to classes on days when I was going to use it. Now it's nice to have them readily available every class if needed.
Instructors should be told to leave classrooms in their usual condition when they leave, and should not, for example, leave the keyboard on the floor in a far corner of the room.
In Withers 150, the wireless mouse had to be replaced by a wired mouse at about mid-semester. Please put a wireless mouse back into this classroom. When using Powerpoint it was difficult to walk around the classroom and have to get back to the workstation to advance the Powerpoint slides.
In some lectures, I like to switch back & forth between the laptop and the classroom computer. It takes about 3 seconds to switch. It would be better if the next image came up without 3 seconds of a black screen. Most of my students have been bringing laptops to class, so clicker software that ran on laptops would be better than clickers themselves. That is why I am merely "somewhat" interested in getting clickers.
In Poe 218, it is very difficult to project movies/DVDs during the daytime, especially when the weather is sunny. It is impossible to close the blinds all the way, the sun shines through, and the image fades so that it is barely visible. Also, there is sometimes a latency/lag between image and sound when playing video clips from a CD in the computer. Finally, I had trouble getting sound when using Quicktime this semester in Poe 218. Other than these issues, the technology worked well, and I appreciate the opportunity to have used the room.
In 1025 EB2 and other large classrooms, there are two large screens. The projector is trained on the screen that covers the white board. The second screen is rarely used but does not cover a white board. I would like to see the projector trained on the second screen that does not cover the white board. It would allow me to put reference materials up on the projector as I work problems. I find this very effective with the students and students have given my positive feedback in classrooms where I can do this without sacrificing white board space.
I'm not a fan of the layout in room 1005. The classroom computer screen is in the way of some seats in the class. If you get out of the way of the screen, you are either holed up behind the desk top, and isolated from the class, or on the other side of the screen, where you can reach the computer (I use a remote control but sometimes want to type things, or underline, etc.)
If there was some way that course evaluations could be done in the classroom, but "online" so that the information could be captured with a computer instead of scantron sheets, that would be nice. It may help with the poor completions of the online evaluations.
I would love to use clickers, but I don't want to require students to buy them just for my course.
I would love to use clickers, but I don't want to ask students to buy them just for my class.
I would love to be able to capture the lectures and projected content. I am interested in transitioning to online courses and capturing content in this way would be tremendously helpful.
I would like to know how I could learn more about using the resources we have.
I would like to know how I could learn more about using the resources we have.
I want to control(edit) any content that I would capture and am NOT interested placing my lectures on the internet for general distribution. My lectures are my intellectual property- I am happy to share with registered NCSU students and NCSU colleagues but will not give it away to be dubbed in China.
I use clickers already and know their benefits. The Turning Points system, however, is a total failure. Get rid of it and get us something that wokrs.
I think you do a very good job. I'm glad that you are there and know that you will help as quickly as you can. Thank you.
I plan to use much more of these tools in the future, especially for undergrad teaching--you tube videos, short video clips, animations, etc. This will be really useful when I teach a course on mass media and politics in the next five years.
I know this doesn't have much to do with the technical side of the ClassTech room; however, Poe 216 is in dire need of better lighting!! It is too dark for students to take exams!
I did not use help this semester. In previous semesters service has been good.
I attempted to use the Mimio board-capturing technology for several weeks, and found it inadequate on several levels, most basically in poor fidelity. But if a more reliable system were available, I might try again.
I am not sure of what you mean by "capturing and disturbing content." This is why I am vague in 12-13. I wish I understand what technology would do!
Greg, Bill, and the techies in Biltmore are outstanding.
Great all round.
Good job! Thanks.
During the semester the user interface equipment in the classroom was modified/rearranged/upgraded and I was not informed. It would have been nice not to be caught by surprise.
ClassTech rooms are wonderful. What is not wonderful is that instructors (at least NTT) have to beg for these rooms and hold their breath each semester praying that they will get one. There should be an equitable way of assigning these rooms based on an instructor's proven, demonstrated, effective daily use of these technologies. Some instructors are assigned to rooms in Withers based on seniority, the fact that they want to teach in their office building, or other factors that have nothing to do with their use of technology. Some instructors assigned to these prime rooms do not use the technologies at all. This is unfair and sends a message that the university (or department) places no value on an instructor's ability to integrate technology into instruction. This system needs to be changed. Putting those who don't use technology (or only use the Doc Cam or VCR) into a ClassTech room is unfair and very discouraging to those who desperately need these rooms. It is also highly cost-inefficient.
Class Tech is one of the bright spots of things working at NC State.
A BIG THANKS to classtech this semester. This was our first semester teaching in the renovated Riddick and it had its problems. Beatrice and her staff went well beyond the call of duty to help us even when some of our faculty were at wits ends. At times they became a little vocal as they were frustrated at all the issues in the building. The classtech staff went out of their way to help us rectify all the problems they could help with. I'm sure the resources they spent on our department were beyond what we deserved, but they were determined to do what they could to help us with the transition into the new building. Again, hats off to a great job. Thank you all! Keith Warren Assistant Head Physics Department
1. It would be very nice if the microphone had rechargeable batteries and a recharging station. The 2 AAs now used don't last very long, and spares are often not available close by. 2. All my visual materials, including videos and animations are kept in the course WolfWare locker and downloaded for each class. They are delivered with a web browser. Neither of the two browsers available are perfectly suited for the kinds of things I need to show. Opera, on the other hand has more features that I need than those other two. I would be grateful if Opera were available on the Novell system, or on what ever system you plan to replace it with.
