" Do you have any comments concerning the importance of these technologies to teaching your course?"
| (First, I taught in 450 Riddick, not listed in the pulldown menu.) I use very little of the technology myself. However, the disposition of lab tables is a serious impediment to my teaching: there is inadequate space for my notes, for demonstration equipment, for passing back papers, etc. The presumption appears to be that all teaching needs is video display technology. This is incorrect. | ||||
| A functioning VCR would be useful to me since I have videotapes in my possession that I would sometimes like to use, and there may be resources useful to my courses that are still available only on videocassette. However, the VCRs in the smart classrooms were not reliable or always available this semester. | ||||
| Ability to connect my laptop (Mac) is essential as the Windows PC provided in the room is not useful. | ||||
| As it happens, the class does not rely on technology, although a class I teach in the Spring will rely on laptop and document projector. | ||||
| Availability of the LCD projector and laptop connection are mandatory for the class. The other items I never use. | ||||
| Because of the size of the classroom, the wireless microphone was needed; but, it was not working most of the time. | ||||
| Both my students and I used he equipment regularly, and I found it absolutely necessary to achieve the goals and activities (both teacher-led and student-led) of my class. | ||||
| Clickers are essential. They provide feedback as to whether the lectures are getting through or not. | ||||
| Computer with USB connection for flash drive was the most useful one. Document camera has been very helpful. The whole projection system has been very useful although the black/white board is still a necessity. | ||||
| critical to the delivery of my courses. | ||||
| Dab 220 is set up to capture audio and video to deliver as a podcast. Doing so is essentially automatic. I'd like more control over what is ultimately delivered to students, but it works. | ||||
| Document camera essential | ||||
| document camera provides greatest flexibility | ||||
| Document camera seems useful, because there are small instruments that I need to demonstrate. | ||||
| Doing real-time simulations on the computer and running applets during class is very important. | ||||
| DVDs can be played through the computers although sometimes a bit rough. | ||||
| Elmo is critical | ||||
| Essential for presenting course materials - audio (embedded in PPT) and presentations | ||||
| Essential. | ||||
| Even if not used this year, they offer opportunities for a broader exposure of materials for and instructor creating an exposure | ||||
| Even though I might not have used all of the available equipment this semester I appreciate it being there. My class is constantly updated and I might need it in the future. | ||||
| except for the last 2, all are important and esential | ||||
| Extremely important - students would miss out a lot of essential material without them | ||||
| For my presentations, a working computer and projector were essential. However, use of the whiteboard was also important, but typical student hijinks like taking the caps off all the markers caused me to bring my own marker for class. Also, projector issues started to arise during the forth week or so, thus I moved my class into a non ClassTech classroom that just had a computer and projector that was maintained by our department, so I know it would work everytime, and a chalkboard. | ||||
| Having the access to this technology really helps to facilitate different teaching styles to keep student attention. | ||||
| Having the computer projector is the essential portion of the technology for my use. | ||||
| Having the internet available on the big screen is a great asset. With the advent of online video, students can see short clips of many things that before were not available. All the tech equipment definitly makes teaching a large class more effective. | ||||
| I almost always had difficulty logging out of the computer. I would need to say "okay" to numerous errors before I could log out of the machine. | ||||
| I believe every classroom should have a computer and projector. | ||||
| I cannot imagine teaching a course without access to these technologies. If I am not assigned a classtech room, I totally freak out. Without a classtech room, I must redesign my whole curriculum: rather than accessing relevant, meaningful content via the web and other technologies, I have to revert to hardcopy handouts and a stupid overhead projector (antiquated technology). Because I am in the language field, I need daily access to the web, to audio and video. One thing that really pisses me off (pardon my French)is that some instructors that are privy to classtech rooms don't use the technoloy at all. I think that, in order to be assigned classtech rooms, instructors should have to prove how the technology is integrated into their courses. I know that in my department (FLL) some tenure-track professors are given classtech rooms simply because they don't want to have to walk to classrooms outside of their office building. This is totally unfair. Classtech rooms should be given to those who have proved that these technologies are essential to their course delivery. | ||||
| I cannot teach my course without the computer and laptop connection. I use webassign, vpython demos, and turningpoint software. | ||||
| I consider it a huge plus NOT to have to bring my personal laptop into the classroom. It is one thing less to carry. It would be very difficult for me to teach without the use of a microphone - it is a true essential. | ||||
| I did not record my lectures so the microphone was not used. | ||||
| I did not try the DVD in this classroom. In the past with other classrooms, notably Bostian 3712 I have tried to play DVDs on the computer and they would not play. I will be in Bostian 3712 next semester and would like to see that remedied. | ||||
| I feel that all the technologies work together to create a positive teaching environment. I didn't use the laptop inputs because the students and I just used jumpdrives with the main computer. | ||||
| I just use projector to show maps and occasional objects. I will be showing slides (some digitalized) in the spring. | ||||
| I love the new doc cam, and I use it very often. | ||||
| I loved having the ability to use my usb drive in the computer and have instant access to any class notes or outlines and also the ability to access web sites during class that were pertinent to the material. The DVD player was not necessary because the computer has a DVD player. | ||||
| I mostly require access to the internet (web sites) and computer projection. Most of my lectures are power point presentations that sometimes include web site references. I usually scan key documents (maps, non-digital photos, etc.) but sometimes at the last minute find the documemts camera useful or necessary. Occasionally guest speakers want to use their laptop computers instead of having other media for presentations. | ||||
| I much prefer a classroom w/ these technologies then w/o. | ||||
| I never got to use any of the stuff mentioned above -- except for the projector. I taught in Riddick and equipment was not ready as promised. I also received no information about progress -- probably because there was none being made... | ||||
| I ran into some problems with the DVD player and the dvd drive for the computer and was not able to show a movie. I called the help desk and they came out and fixed the problem before the next class. :) | ||||
| I really rely on the overhead transparency because I use lots of maps with my lectures. | ||||
| I taught a graduate seminar on Foreign Language Teaching methods in a Classtech room. As this course deals with 'best teaching practices' both my graduate Ss and myself make frequent use of the Internet, DVD player, visualizer and PowerPoint as we share materials, lesson plans etc and view teachers in action in video clips. This course could not be effectively taught without access to technology. | ||||
| I use lots of A/V with my course including ppts, internet access, streaming video mostly from the lectern computer, however there have been times when I was using the lectern and the overhead simultaneously. I also think it's important to have the overhead as a backup if the technology goes wrong. | ||||
| I use the tablet computer/projector every day. | ||||
| I used the technology for showing powerpoints, DVDs, connection to You Tube & PBS, & connection to governmental websites. It made the class more interesting for students and for me. I use VHSs in other classes, but am trying to convert them to DVDs at the Digital Media Lab when copyrights allow me to make the DVDs. Maybe your office can assist us with that, as it is very time consuming. | ||||
| I very much appreciate having these technologies available -- THANK YOU! I don't normally bring my laptop to class so having the computer access is a big plus. Having the document camera makes it possible for me to teach facing the class and was especially important this time since I had a visually impaired student in the classroom. The DVD player is broken in this room, but fortunately I have a VHS version of the movie that I like to show. | ||||
| I was in Leazar 310. There was a projector mounted on the ceiling, and about mid semester the remote control was removed, and I was not able to manipulate the settings. Other than that glitch, the projector worked just fine. | ||||
| I was surprised at how much I enjoyed having the computer in the classroom and the document camera fufilled the function of an overhead but then even more, which was very handy for students sharing work. | ||||
| Important to have DVD and VCR in classroom although DVD player broke and had to play DVD's through computer. | ||||
| In this classroom, it is hard to get the print on the computer screen or document projector to be large enough to be effective. Students in the back can't see the print. So that all of my students could see something at the same time, I made handouts for almost every single class. | ||||
| It has become so unbelievably convenient to teach in these classrooms. There are so many resources available to enhance the classroom experience. I used to carry a laptop bag, a projector, and my back pack from the Social Work office to whatever building I was teaching in. | ||||
| It is important to have internet access in the classroom. This allows me to show my Vista locker and also course content that is located there. | ||||
| It was great! | ||||
| I've come to depend on the document camera and my ability to call up a website for the class. | ||||
| keep the vcr's- I have clips of old research that is not available on dvd | ||||
| Laptop inputs are the most important as it allows one some assurance that things such as animations will work. The microphone system in Bostian 3712 works 'okay', but the controls are mystifying for those times when it does not seem to be working (could there not be a simple control for volume?). | ||||
| No comments, but my classroom is not on the list: Jordan 1216 | ||||
| no comments, just gratitude | ||||
| None beyond what I have already indicated. | ||||
| Nope | ||||
| Only needed the overhead projector when the document camera wasn't working. This happened threetimes during the semester. I also use a VHS player in one of my courses. It is important. | ||||
| Overhead not in room. I would have used more but I did not know how to operate them or at least was unsure enough about operating them that I did not try them during class. | ||||
| Really enables the use of various media to enhance the experience of literature. | ||||
| Right now I avoid using those technologies because the students don't seem to respond well unless I write on the board, giving them time to also write their lecture notes. | ||||
| Several issues with equipment and set up - 1) room is too dark - asked all semester from classtech to help desk to R&R to have burned out bulbs (about 1/3 were out all semester) replaced - never were - unfair to students, no light on white board - essentially worthless and rarely did dry erase markers work, cord too short to laptop hookup, doc cam is right above where all cords come out - how can you set something there to project - never used because of this after 3 attempts, don't like wireless keyboard or mouse - people never put mouse back in charger (not your fault) - rec. getting laser pointer mouse if using wireless, batteries for replacement of mic and keyboard often not in cabinet - called help desk - came to check - didn't bring batteries - have to love that | ||||
| Statistics is a course that is built on data collection and analysis, which requires access to a computer. The need for interaction also requires the document camera. | ||||
| Technology VERY important. Delivery erratic. | ||||
| The computer is very important. I play CDs and DVDs with it and use it every day to project information from a Power Pt, the web, or a Word doc. | ||||
| The doc cam is right above the area where all the wires and links comes out - IMPOSSIBLE to get materials to lay flat to view - cords are always to short for link to lap top - wireless keyboard needed new batteries once and 2X for mic (and people will NEVER put the mouse back on charger - not your fault) - When called help desk for batteries for keyboard (since none in cabinet) - waited, they came, confirmed dead but didn't bring any batteries (love that) - BIGGEST THING, ABOUT 1/3 OF LIGHTS ARE OUT IN ROOM AND REQUESTED ALL SEMESTER FOR REPLACEMENTS AND NEVER DONE - IT IS WAY TOO DARK IN THAT ROOM, NOT FAIR TO STUDENTS AND THERE ARE NO LIGHTS ON WHITE BOARD, WORTHLESS!!!!! | ||||
| The document camera has been critical to my approach for teaching my lectures to a large class. | ||||
| The document camera is extremely useful. It would be even more so if it could project colors. | ||||
| The document camera is fantastic - SO much better than using transparencies. I wish they were in every classroom. | ||||
| The equipment in Winston 29 is older than some I have used in other rooms, but it is easy to use and that is good. Please check the VCR drive to be sure it is functioning properly---I was unable to play one of my VCR tapes at the end of the semester. It got stuck in the drive and I could not get it out, nor could I play it. In question 3, use of computer and laptop applies to in-class student presentations where this technology needs to be available for students who use this format in their presentation. | ||||
| The installation of VPython on this computer was buggy for several weeks in the middle of the semester, and it took a long time to resolve. Since this is a key resource for the class I teach, it was quite problematic. | ||||
| The microphone unit in 3712 Bostian rarely ever worked, but the acoustics of the room are such that it is not needed (with my voice). The document camera is an eseential piece of equipment in teaching my course. The overhead projectors should be kept in the lecture hall. There was a power outage on campus that rendered the document camera unusable for the class period, and I had to go to the overhead transparency projector as a backup. Please keep one of these in the lecture hall in case other technology fails. | ||||
| The new microphone that appeared toward the end of the semester works so much better than the old one! Unfortunately, it goes through batteries very quickly and I'm not sure if the users are responsible for replacements or if they are to be provided. | ||||
| Their availability stimulated and will continue to stimulate my thinking about how to use them. | ||||
| there needs to be better information on what technology is available and how to use it. | ||||
| These technologies are critical to make effective use of everyone's time and to maximize the educational experience. | ||||
| These technologies are essential for teaching and classroom productivity. | ||||
| These technologies are essential for the display of my powerpoint slides. | ||||
| These technologies are essentual for many courses. In Spring 2008 I will be teaching a course with an art history component in which technology is absolutely essential, but I was not assigned a 'smart' classroom. Do you have any remedy for this? Thanks. | ||||
| These technologies are important to the course. | ||||
| These technologies enhanced the instruction for students; they broaden the access to more information and provided efficiency in the sharing of information while stimulating discussion and application. | ||||
| They are all very important to me. I plan my classes around having technology. | ||||
| They are essential and enhance my teaching significantly. | ||||
| They are very important and will be incorporated into my lectures in future semesters. | ||||
| They were essential. | ||||
| This room did not actually have a lectern computer installed, and this was a huge problem. I was able to get by using a laptop I brought to each class, but it was very burdensome to get the lap top set up and working before each class, and on many occasions the start of class was delayed because of the need to recheck cable connections, reboot, get display settings right, etc. | ||||
| Under some circumstances, some of these technologies could come into play in some of my courses. Not much, in Latin 201. | ||||
| Use computer and doc camera in every lecture | ||||
| Use of a computer or laptop to project information has become mandatory. | ||||
| VCRs are essential because some of the videos that professors show are only available in VHS format. I don't want to deprive my students of the opportunity to see a great film that will supplement their learning. | ||||
| VCRS are vital for what I teach. I have literally years of film clips, tv clips, etc. that are in VHS format. Please please please leave me my VCR. | ||||
| Very helpful | ||||
| Vital for classroom teaching. | ||||
| Yes they are important and are a big help for teaching. | ||||
| Yes, these tecnologies are fantastic for foreign language courses. Having the ability to utilize visual images, sound and a variety of technology definitely makes the class more beneficial for the students and my teaching (presentations, etc.) more effective. I don't think the VCR players should be removed because although I did not use VCR tapes this semester, I did use them last semester in another level of Spanish, because I could record target language and culture TV shows in order to show them to my class. | ||||
| You don't mention student response units ("clickers") which are essential, and as you know only too well were an ENORMOUS hassle due to having chosen a system that faculty strongly advised against choosing, for reasons that were shown to be completely valid and vindicated. We're all quite angry about that. |
