Spring 2009 Survey

"Do you have any comments concerning the importance of these technologies to teaching your course?"

they are useful when available
My course (4th semester French) is designed around having access to the Internet (for streaming audio and video) and websites from the target-language culture. I use the visualizer every day for warm-ups and projecting cultural realia. Presentation of new vocabulary and grammar is supported by PowerPoint presentations. Technology opens the door to the Francophone world for students who may never have the opportunity to travel outside of the US.
no
I rated VCR as somewhat important even though I haven't used it since I notice some resources in the media center are only available in VCR format.
No
Document camera is quite useful for showing things from books.
The classroom computer is essential for me because I show a lot of video clips (mostly from YouTube), and wireless is not adequate for a laptop to reliably show video on the web.
Those that I use are essential (for me)
The students in this course had to give major presentations, so the technologies indicated were critical to their success.
I did not use the DVD or VCR this semester, but it is important to have them available. I might need them next time. Why would one need an overhead transparency projector when there is a document camera?
I use computer assistance in virtually every class of every course.
Yes. The Document Camera mostly got in the way of instruction, and was apparently broken most of the semester (through rough handling by instructors, I presume).
My class is very media intensive. It is critical that we have high quality, high functioning AV equipment in the room.
Although I didn't use the technology often, it was good to know it was available when I needed it.
Too many failures of the projection system. Too many other people screwing up the equipment. It's not a good teaching environment. You never know if things are going to work properly.
Wonderful--- keep it up
The batteries were so frequently dead in the wireless mic in BR 2211 that I had to carry my own.
VHS was not essential this semester because the library had a copy of the film that I wanted to show available on DVD. I have had semesters in the past where this was not the case and in those situations, having a VHS player in the room was convenient.
I taught in three classrooms this semeseter, two of which had instructional technology and one without. I think the technology being available is of utmost importance in teaching. Some concepts are just too difficult to explain without the student being able to see it working in front of them. Also, the document camera is EXCELLENT because we are limited to black and white printing for classes, and sometimes figures are just plain easier to see in color.
They're so crucial for doing any interdisciplinary teaching, and are helpful pedagogically generally for students who learn best in different formats
Computer, projection, laptop capabilities critical
They were essential.
I would have used the document camera much more than I did, but the ceiling mounted version in WI232A is much more difficult to use than the desktop units in other ClassTech rooms. Why isn't there simply one of the desktop units in this room? Among the many problems with the ceiling camera is that its zoom feature is not powerful enough.
The computer was used every class and made notetaking and students' presentations quick and easy. The document camera was also invaluable for student presentations.
Having the doc cam was extremely helpful for my course.
They enriched my teaching.
I need almost daily access to my course website and the ability to project power point presentations for lectures. If I can't access the website where the semester lecture and assignment schedule is located, then student questions in class about those elements are harder to answer.
Although I did not use the Laptop inputs or DVD player, I am likely to do so in the future.
Is there a service to convert VHS tapes to other forms of media? If you could convert my tapes, I would use other media.
I only used the DVD player for its video input. I used it to display the output of a video camera that was used to project a zoomed image of a very small demonstration.
I wouldn't be able to teach this course without the Classtech classroom.
In order to continue teaching my class as is, I absolutely NEED the document camera, computer and video-playing technologies Classtech rooms offer. This generation of students really responds to and requests greater use of technology in the classroom.
The ability to connect to a laptop and the internet has become an essential part of teaching in the modern classroom.
1. Please try to find a way to replace the microphones with ones that have re-chargeable batteries. I change batteries more than I should because other folks often don't swicth off the mic when they put it away.<br> 2. The document camera is hard to use without a monitor. The one in Riddick 321 is far superior.
these technologies provide important features not otherwise available to the instructor (and therefore the students)
I teach a classroom course and a Distance Education course simultaneously (via webcast). This would be impossible without these technologies.
It is extremely helpful to have these technologies available!
Very effective and necessary for rapid results presentation. It multiplies in class time by 2-4 times.
Classtech equipment is essential to making a large lecture hall like Withers 232A into an effective classroom
The technologies I used are essential to the course (ARS 257: Technology in the Arts); since we do not have a formal text, I rely upon NY Times articles; electronic reserves; film; websites and multi-media. This makes for an informative and interesting course.
I really count on the technology and feel bare without it now.
They really enhance facilitation of learning.
This is essential to successful teaching of my course. I requested a technology classroom. As per #4 below to remove VHS the NCSU library needs to purchase additional DVDs for the library collection to replace the current VHS tapes
They weren't necessary and I didn't request the room, but toward the end of the semester I found it very helpful to have the computer + projector available - which I used to show visual representations of multi-variable functions that I previously drew by hand on the board. If I'd known further ahead of time that I'd have these tools I would've made better use of them at the beginning of the semester.
It would be extremely useful to have a printed instruction list (one page or less in length) to warn users that they should NOT shutdown the PC. This was a major problem in the room I used! Most faculty from other departments did not logout but used shutdown when exiting the PC login. Then I needed to call someone and there usually wasn't time to do this before my class because of the heavy schedule of the room.
None
I still used videotapes, so it was important to have the VCR. It was essential to have the computer linked to my Wolfware class web site.
I used the lectern computer for clicker-questions and display of computer simulations, both of which are essential to the course. Unfortunately, for physics demos which require computerized data-collection, I had to plug in a laptop as well since the software isn't installed on the lectern computer.
No
I did not use any of the technology. at the beginning I showed a down loaded video (once) and tried to use the document reader but found it unsatisfactory. I preferred to raise the screen and write on the board, photographing the boards as they were filled for recording the course. Perhaps next year I will make more use of the equipment
These technologies are absolutely necessary in teaching a foreign language. The quality of the course suffers when the classroom lacks them.
I love the overhead projector, but I want it in good working order.
I need them all
Wireless microphone was impossible to work with - either projecting too loud with too much feedback or becoming inaudible, irrespective of the sound system volume
Although I do not use the microphone, I consider it important as I would need it if any students with hearing disabilities (or others) stated that I was not loud enough.
I have grown to need access to the internet (syllabus, assignments and other on line class components) and requested this classroom.
The impact on the students is 1000% better than a plain classroom. This technology allows the students to teach well the results of their discoveries.
With availablity assured, I am integrating more material into course to provide students with real world examples.
In large classroom computer aided teaching is essential.
The room should be equipped with a computer.
Microphone, document camera, and clickers I would consider essential
Document camera is most flexible, as I tend to use print material, and spontaneous handwriting. so one device fits all needs.
These technologies are vital since I use webassign for homework assignments, view YouTube videos during class, display concepts with applets accessed from websites, etc.
No
The convenience and the expectation of students raised on images and Power Point make it essential to incorporate images and lecture outlinge and DVDs in the courses I teach.
Very useful- setup could be improved. (see below)
I have structured my course such that these technologies are vital.
Essential for all my courses
