Pea Island (the northern section of Hatteras Island) is located just south of Oregon Inlet. It is characterized by a series of high artificial dunes which protect Highway 12 from ocean overwash. However, natural erosion and storms have frequently removed these dunes. What is the evidence of human existence on this barrier island?
