Steps for a Semester Withdrawal

A Semester Withdrawal will withdraw a student from ALL courses in a current or previous semester. All withdrawals for degree students are initiated through the NCSU Counseling Center.

If you are a Lifelong (PBS, UGS) student, please contact The Department of Registration and Records at 515-2572.

  • Current Semester Withdrawal (after the last day of the Official Drop Period in the current semester) or Previous Semester Withdrawal:

A late (current semester after the last day of the official drop period) or retroactive (prior semester) withdrawal permits a student to drop all of the courses that he/she is registered for after the last day to officially drop in a given semester. This process requires the student to consult with a counselor in more depth and typically requires the student to schedule an appointment.

Withdrawal petitions involve several steps on the part of the student and the University to insure that sufficient grounds exist to alter a student's record. Skip Here for more complete information regarding withdrawals.

  1. Consult with your advisor to discuss the academic implications of the intended withdrawal, and to plan for other avenues in the event that your withdrawal request is not approved.

  2. Come to the Counseling Center to schedule an Initial Appointment to talk with a Counselor and, if applicable, to discuss appropriate documentation.

  3. Fill out the Withdrawal Pre-Application Form. Organize the details of your case as best you can before you see your counselor. It is often helpful to write a statement detailing the grounds for your request to withdraw (e.g. what occured, when it occurred, how it affected you, and what you have done or plan to do about it).

    • For Medical and Psychological withdrawals, this statement can be provided on the Withdrawal Pre-Application Form:
MS Word Document
PDF File (requires Adobe Acrobat)
  • For Hardship Withdrawals, this statement should be in a letter addressed to your Academic Dean.
  1. Attend a withdrawal evaluation session at the Counseling Center, where your Counselor will help determine the type of withdrawal being requested.
In Cases where the student is Unable to Come to Campus:

If you are not within the Raleigh area or otherwise unable to come in to the Counseling Center to initiate the process of Withdrawing from the current semester, please call the Counseling Center at 515-2423, M-F 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. You can also download the appropriate paperwork including an Off-Campus Withdrawal Application here.

In Cases of Medical or Psychological Withdrawals Requests:
    • Your Counselor will evaluate existing documentation and/or assist you in obtaining a further evaluation. If the Counselor believes that you may have a legitimate case for withdrawal, your written permission will be required to consult with the Associate Dean of your college. The Associate Dean may raise additional questions, require additional documentation, or set certain conditions that must be met before a withdrawal is approved. Ultimately, if approved, the Withdrawal Application Form will be completed by your Counselor and You and You will be given a Withdrawal Clearance Sheet. The student must walk the Withdrawal Clearance Sheet through the appropriate offices and ultimately leave the form at office of Registration & Records in Harris Hall.
In Cases of Hardship Withdrawal Requests:
    • Your Counselor will provide you with a Withdrawal Application FOrm and will direct you to the appropriate person in your college for additional information after verifyling that your potential grounds for applying for a withdrawal are not mainly medical or psychological. If approved the Associate Dean of your college will indicate approval on the Withdrawal Application Form and direct you back to the Counseling Center to obtain the Withdrawal Clearance Sheet. No appointment is necessary to pick up this form once the Application is signed by the Dean. Students may walk in to the Counseling Center during regular walk-in hours. These are Weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. except Wednesday, when the hours are 11 am to 4 pm. The student must walk the Withdrawal Clearance Sheet through the appropriate offices and ultimately leave the form at office of Registration & Records in Harris Hall.
