Psychiatric Evaluation and Services

Psychiatric Services is one of the treatment options available to you as a NCSU Student through the Counseling Center. There are psychaitrists on staff which serve as consultants to the Professional Staff and the students. Students wishing to consider medication or students needing medication management will first need to be seen by a Counselor. The Counselor will then arrange for the evaluation by the Psychiatrist.

Students who may benefit from the effects of medication therapy will be required to be in counseling with a staff counselor as well. Research has shown that a combined approach of therapy and medication appears more effective than either treatment alone. Students are eligible for three (3) appointments with a psychiatrist before any additional fees are assessed. If the student needs more than these 3 appointments, there will be a $40 charge for each session.

After an initial evaluation for medication, follow-up appointments with the psychiatrist are geared toward managing medication issues and monitoring progress. Concurrent therapy will continue to focus on dealing with underlying issues and skill building.

For more information regarding medication and medication issues review the information in our resources section on medication.
