The Southeast SIAM Regional Workshop on Mathematics in Industry will be held at North Carolina State University on October 10-12, 1999. This is the fourth Workshop in a series of regional meetings focused on mathematics in industry. Previous Workshops were held at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (May, 1998) and at the University of Illinois , Chicago (October 1998). The third Workshop was held at the Claremont Colleges June 16-19, 1999.
The Southeast Workshop will provide a forum for discussions among students, faculty and industrial representatives about the needs for applied mathematicians in industry. The objectives are to facilitate change in the development of undergraduate and graduate programs and to inform students of opportunities in industrial and applied mathematics.
The Workshop Program will feature presentations on opportunities and needs for mathematicians in industry, on the experiences of current students and recent graduates, and on applied math program initiatives at the undergraduate and graduate level. Representatives from industry will also discuss opportunities for internships and other practical experiences. Mini-symposia are planned in the following areas: Mathematics in Medicine, Imaging Science, Mathematical Finance, Optimal Design, and Optimization in the Airline Industry.
Colleges and Universities desiring to present a poster session on their applied/industrial mathematics program and industries desiring to participate are encouraged to contact the organizers:

Strategically located just southwest of the North Carolina State University central campus, the McKimmon Center offers you easy access to I-40 and 440. These two main thoroughfares take you just about anywhere you need to go in the Triangle, quickly. If you are travelling by air, Raleigh-Durham International Airport is within a ten-minute drive. Registration Fee $50. Send a check made out to "North Carolina State University (MII Workshop)". The registration fee will cover the Reception (Sunday, October 10), box lunch and dinner (Monday, October 11) and coffee breaks (am and pm, Sunday thru Tuesday). A grant from NSF to SIAM allows partial to full support for registration, travel and housing for some participants, especially students. Transportation Information:
The Raleigh-Durham International Airport (Information Assistance (919) 840-2123 Web site: www.rdu.comand) and I-40, which connects the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, combine with the area's extensive network of state highways and the newly widened I-440 Beltline to provide convenient access to and from many destinations. Twelve major airlines and six commuter airlines offer approximately 200 daily arrivals at the airport, located in Wake County.
Amtrak passenger service is also available, as well as bus service with Carolina Trailways/Greyhound Bus Lines.
There will be ample free parking at the McKimmon Center.
