The goal of the event was to match volunteers with non-profit partners in a large-scale service event as well as to encourage these volunteers to continue serving throughout the year. Over 2000 volunteers were matched with approximately 50 community partners for the April 2005 event. The value of Service Raleigh was quite visible in the community. This year alone, over 800 trees were planted at Anderson Point Park, 7000 pounds of trash were picked up, a wheel chair ramp was built and many meals were prepared and delivered to the community.

| Over the past 4 years, NC State's Habitat for Humanity Chapter has built 6 houses. This past year, the club brought 25-30 volunteers to their sponsored work site each Saturday. Approximately 5,000 volunteer hours were generated this year by this organization alone. Within the club officer structure, 3 students serve as "Work Projects Coordinators." These students are able to provide enough oversight and leadership to the 30 student volunteers that the Wake County Habitat office no longer supervises them and can now focus their energies on other home sites. The organization also works with other NC State clubs and organizations by inviting them to bring their members to the work site. Out of their 30 weekly volunteers, 10 are usually from various groups around campus. Should you ask them, the Habitat club members would tell you that they dedicate their Saturday's to the work site because for every home they build there is one less family living in a substandard, unsafe and/or unaffordable home. |

Habitat for Humanity possesses a focused and clear goal - their motto is "Hammering away to give humanity a place to stay." Habitat strives to educate students, staff and the greater community about substandard housing issues and to literally make a difference. Each Saturday the chapter works at a local Wake County site and spends Tuesdays tutoring children of Habitat homeowners. The NC State chapter also sponsors an Alternative Spring Break trip - typically to Georgia - where they participate in a blitz build
which is the attempt to build and dry in one house in a week. The NC State chapter has been the only group to successfully do this at their location for several years. In addition they hold numerous campus wide and community wide fund raisers including the annual campus Shack-a-thon, Habifest, the "House Your Neighbor" 5K run and the "Hungry for Housing Benefit Dinner". As an example of their fundraising power - this group had a goal to raise $10,000 last fall during Shack-a-thon
they actually raised $17,789
they blew their goal out of the water. With an active membership of over 100 students they are the role models for other service organizations.

Shanna is a student with a variety of interests but a passion for service. As a college student, she has demonstrated her love for mentoring and serving though her involvement in the National Society of Black Engineers - NSBE. In this organization she serves as the Community Service chair and has been instrumental in getting her peers involved with weekly science & math tutoring. The program she coordinates is called the "Pre-College Initiative" and has made a great impact on Wake County high school students and NSBE members. Beyond tutoring, Shanna has coordinated college visits to a number of schools (NC State, Clemson, NC Central and Duke to name a few) etiquette classes and PowerPoint and Technical Presentations training for the students in the Pre-College Initiative. Through the Center for Student Leadership, Ethics & Public Service Shanna is a recipient of the NC ACTS Scholarship. North Carolina Activating Citizenship Through Service is an AmeriCorps program through which participants earn a small educational award in return for 300 hours of community service. Shanna has spent that time mentoring and tutoring in a variety of elementary, middle and high schools near the NC State campus. Additionally she takes every opportunity to join in on one-time service projects such as Service NC State, Habitat for Humanity's annual Shack-a-thon, the Alternative Fall Break Trip to Asheville, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Service Challenge and Service Raleigh.

During her first year here at NC State, Kate Sutton participated in a number of programs sponsored by the Center for Student Leadership, Ethics & Public Service (CSLEPS). Kate has become an active student leader dedicated to serving others and the community. The following is a short list of some of the many ways she has served the NC State and surrounding community.
- Service NC State - Kate volunteered her very first Saturday as a freshman during a ½ day event in August.
- Participated in The Emerging Leaders Program which is a 9-week leadership course which covered a variety of leadership topics and a service project at the Durham Crisis Response Center.
- Team member for the Alternative Fall Break Trip to Asheville where she volunteered with the Manna Food Bank and Habitat for Humanity.
- Member of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Planning Committee - which developed a 6-hour service and social issues education event for 100 students on January 2005.
- Served as a tutor for elementary and middle school students in reading each week at the Kumon Learning Center in Cary
- Served on the Relay for Life Planning Committee
- Volunteered at the Red Cross Booth at the NC State Fair
Through all of these involvements, has clearly demonstrated her desire and commitment to personal growth, and an orientation toward learning about privilege and her role as a servant leader. An example of this occurred when we asked her why she gave up her Fall Break to go on the AFB trip. She responded, "Service is about sacrifice - AFB was a better opportunity than sitting around. The longer time to serve made me feel like I could make a bigger difference."
