Jon, a junior from the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, desires to be a civil rights attorney one day. This desire has come through many life experiences, the most impactful being his volunteer work. Jon has volunteered in a variety of settings: as a tutor at a local women’s shelter, at the food bank, participated in adopt a highway and sorted clothes at a clothing closet, and helped establish the program - Preparing for College Success - which educates local high school students about scholarships. Jon has also raised thousands of dollars so that he could learn more about global issues and volunteer internationally. Jon has served in Peru and in Rome - and heads to China and Tanzania to volunteer during the summer of 2008. His true impact though has come from how he’s inspired other NC State students around him. Jon’s nominator wrote that he’s learned more from him through his quiet and humble role modeling than anything else he’s experienced … Jon specifically role models values and action. |

This NC State organization has approximately 800 members made up of undergraduate and graduate students, post doc fellows, faculty, visiting scholars and their relatives. Their mission involves serving the needs of Chinese students and scholars on our campus. Though not a traditional “service organization,” they clearly do provide a service to these important members of the NC State community. One of the most notable service events the group sponsor each year is airport pick-ups and housing new students as they arrive in the U.S. This year they picked up and found housing for over 160 students who arrived from China at varying times prior to the fall semester. This involves coordinating host families and volunteers to house students until they can move into campus or community housing. This service is crucial to welcome and assist Chinese students as they transition to NC State. Additionally they have coordinated law seminars to educate members on visa’s, green card applications, helped new students solve everyday problems in their new environment, hosted social events which have brought students from UNC, Duke and NC State together, cultural programming for our campus to educate our community on diversity and have raised funds for disaster relief after huge snow storms hit parts of China this past winter.

| This year Habitat for Humanity, whose mission is to eliminate poverty housing, worked with over 40 student organizations to build 16 shacks on the brickyard. During the week that the shacks were in existence volunteers living in the them collected over $25,800, which was used to sponsor a home in Wake County. This is the largest amount raised yet by the NC State tradition. The overwhelming response from the student body (as well as the surrounding community) helped the chapter earn enough to win a $10,000 matching grant from State Farm Insurance. |

Alpha Delta Pi’s national philanthropy is the Ronald McDonald House Charity. NC State’s chapter volunteers twice a week at the Durham Ronald McDonald house, cooking dinner, coordinating activities, playing with siblings and visiting with parents of sick children in nearby hospitals. In addition to volunteering at the house they hold 2 major fundraisers each year. This year they raised over $10,000 to donate to the Durham Ronald McDonald House. Their philanthropy efforts become very real to the sisters of this sorority as they interact with and directly volunteer with recipients of their fundraising. Their nominator wrote ”Having a chance to change someone’s life while with your sisters is unforgettable.” |

Josh was one of 500+ CALS freshman who saw a presentation by CSLEPS in his introduction to the college course. What set him apart was his immediate involvement in our programs. Josh has served as a Campus Pals “Big Brother” every Wednesday to Raekwan a 2nd grader student at Wiley Elementary School and joined the Service-Leadership Consultants a group of students who plan service events in the community and assist our staff with hosting leadership events. His most notable contribution was serving as the lead co-planner for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Service Challenge. This year, the event involved 60 Ligon Middle School students and 60 NC State students. Together this group learned about Dr. King’s views on social justice issues and participated in 3 service projects to benefit the Salvation Army. Due to Josh’s leadership the group produced 41 Hand-tied fleece blankets for children in the Women's & Children's Shelter, 484 Peanut Butter & Jelly Sandwiches to give to folks in the Soup Kitchen Line, 203 Health Care Kits for general clients. Lastly Josh traveled to the Forum to End Hunger with another 1st year student this past spring break. Along with Candice Jones, Josh will be starting our the new student chapter of Universities Fighting World Hunger at NC State. We look to see great things out of this student organization in the future. |
