The Alternative Spring Break Leadership Team and Supporters were recongized with the 2007 Team Spirit Award from the NC State Division of Student Affairs. Established in 1996, this award recognizes outstanding teamwork, either within an organizational unit or between or among organizational units. Emphasis is given to cooperative, collaborative efforts that were initiated or continued during the year.
Spring Break 2007 sent over 180 students and faculty served in one of ten locations around the world. CSLEPS continued its service-learning partnerships with:
- Habitat for Humanity in the Dominican Republic and Ecuador
- Habitat for Humanity in New Orleans (Hurricane Katrina Relief)
- Orphanage Outreach in the Dominican Republic (teaching English)
- Peaceworks in Belize (environmental project)
- Interfaith Alliance of Philadelphia (interfaith understanding and homelessness)
- Amizade in Tuba City, Arizona (teaching in the Navajo schools)
- Faith Ministry (medical clinic services in Mexico)
Additionally, the ASB program added three new initiatives in 2007 including two health-related projects in partnership with CALS that supported health clinics in Guatemala and Mexico, and a partnership with the Women's Center for a gender issues project in Guatemala.
CSLEPS recently received the 2006 "Hero's Circle Award" from Orphanage Outreach (headquartered in Arizona, but working in partnership with Orphanages in the Dominican Republic). The ASB program has partnered with OO for the past two years, sending teams to volunteer as English tutors at the orphanage and in the local schools. In addition, this year's team, led by Michael Adelman and Lee Jackson, helped fund-raise and purchase a Spanish literacy program for the orphanage as well as provided additional funds to help pay for a second floor to be added to one of the buildings at the orphanage in Monti Cristi. Thanks to all of those who have supported our partnership with Orphanage Outreach over the past two years. Stop by the center to see the beautiful framed picture of some of the boys from the orphanage.
