The Martin Luther King Jr. event traditionally invites 125 participants to learn about Martin Luther King, Jr's message on service and a variety of social justice issues. This event typically involves a service project of some sort.

2009 Event:

The 2009 event took place on Saturday - January 24, 2009. We partnered with students from Ligon Middle School to complete 3 service projects for the Salvation Army. We were joined by 34 Ligon middle schoolers, 7 community members and 71 NC State students.

Project results:

  • 42 Hand-tied fleece blankets for children in the Women's & Children's Shelter
  • 77 Welcome Packages for children at the shelter
  • 312 Health Care Kits for general clients
  • 82 Peanut Butter & Jelly Sandwiches for the soup kitchen.

Thank you to all the students who served as group leaders and assisted with the facilitation of projects. Special thanks to Mama Thorpe (Toni Thorpe, African American Cultural Center) and Robyn van den Berg (Salvation Army) for helping with the event.

Everybody can be great... because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.
