Luke Perry - Student Volunteer of the Year

With a dynamic character and a true love for all of humankind, Luke is devoutly passionate in working toward the betterment of society. Through his dedication to service, Luke has a positive influence on both the campus and surrounding community.

One of Luke's admirable talents is his work with those who are less fortunate than he. Luke is one of the founders of the non-profit, student-run organization, Hope for the Homeless, Inc. Within the organization, Luke has established various daily programs that directly affect neighboring homeless services such as the Raleigh Rescue Mission, and individuals living on the streets.

In addition to his work with this organization, Luke has been involved with other community service projects such as Service Raleigh and Scholars Council's Random Acts of Kindness Committee. Not only is Luke a prominent figure in service, but also a University Scholar maintaining an excellent grade point average in the Design School. He stands out far beyond all students in a combination of outstanding character, scholarship, and leadership in community service. Luke had earnestly proven himself as a courageous individual who has a deep love for nurturing lives with hope and tranquility and a devotion to servicing society.

Alpha Phi Omega Service Fraternity - Service Club of the Year

With over fifty active members, Alpha Phi Omega has an extensive service program. Each member must complete at least twenty hours of service each semester, and the diverse group of people that make up the organization arrange a variety of projects to touch as many areas of service as possible.

Each spring, the fraternity sells Girls Scout Cookies in the Brickyard to raise money for the Governor Morehead School's Girl Scouts. Other youth service projects the organization has been involved with in the past year are:

  • Attending the Prevent Child Abuse Vigil at the Bell Tower
  • Sponsoring, setting up, and participating in the Boys Club Halloween Carnival
  • Cleaning up a Girl Scout Camp at the Homestead in Louisburg, NC
  • Making and delivering Valentines to the Tammy Lynn Center
  • Staining new wood storage sheds at a boy Scout Camp in Asheboro, NC

Alpha Phi Omega is involved in many campus events, including Bookcheck, Take Back the Night, The UAB Allnighter, and Service Raleigh. Its community service projects include Adopt-A-Highway, Carnivore Preservation Trust, Big Sweep Beach Clean-up, and Blue Jay Point Clean-up.

This fraternity has gone to great lengths to provide service to youth, the campus and to the community for the spirit of service they promote on campus.
