Catholic Campus Ministry
Catholic Campus Ministry in the past has informed the campus community about human rights abuses as an annual participant in Human Rights Week and often brings in speakers to talk about these injustices. CCM also purses an ongoing commitment to service opportunities. Each month they participate in one or two major service projects on the weekends, including Relay For Life, Service Raleigh, Multiple Sclerosis Walk, Habitat For Humanity, and Carnivore Preservation Trust. Also once a month they cook breakfast at 7 AM for homeless persons living at Ark Shelter. For the second year, CCM has sponsored the Living In Faith Everywhere (LIFE) alternative spring break trip. This march they traveled to Philadelphia, PA to work with a variety of service agencies, most notably the Vincentian Volunteer Corps. While there they participated in educational sessions from the service corps, Vincentian brothers, Philadelphia school system, and an addiction recovery program. They volunteered for disabled priests, inner-school children, mentally disabled, and nursing home patients. Most importantly, these participants were willing to give up their spring break to educate themselves about service and to aid others.

Tomas Carbonnell
Tomas Carbonnell is the recipient of the Deborah S. Moore Service Award presented to the individual student whose dedication, selflessness, and volunteerism is unparalleled. Great job, Tomas!
Tomas’ creative ideas and ability to express himself both orally and in his writing impressed me since the onset of our joint project on child mentoring. His interest in our mentoring project went beyond the scope of our coursework, however, and was more deeply based on his intrinsic desire to give back to his community. Tomas’ ability to inspire and motivate others made his passion for service even more powerful. Tomas continued his service efforts for the remainder of the year by participating in projects such as feeding breakfast at a local homeless shelter, working with Interfaith Food Shuttle, cleaning the roadsides with Adopt A Highway, and participating in Student Government. While in Spain during the spring of his sophomore year, he still managed to find time to volunteer several hours a week in a nursing home. Tomas serves others with a very humble attitude, and never once have I seen him expect anything in return for the hundred of hours he volunteers.
