“Shack-A-Thon,” sponsored by Habitat For Humanity

This year’s recipient is “Shack-a-thon” which was sponsored by Habitat for Humanity. Shack-a-thon is NCSU Habitat for Humanity’s annual fall fundraiser. For one week in the fall, they collaborate with other student organizations on campus to build shacks and live in them for a week to create awareness about substandard housing, and to raise money for their chapter. This fall, they raised over $9200, with some of the proceeds going to Habitat for Humanity International for global building. The rest went directly to co-sponsor of a Habitat house in Wake County, which they helped build every Saturday during the school year.

Scouting Troops at the Governor Morehead School for the Blind, sponsored by Alpha Phi Omega

This is a project that a club or organization commits to weekly throughout the academic school year. This year’s recipient is—Alpha Phi Omega who sponsored Scouting Troops at the Gov. Morehead School for the Blind. On a weekly basis, Alpha Phi Omega spends time with students aged 10–14 years at the Governor Morehead School for the Blind. Two members of the fraternity serve as leaders for each Girl & Boy Scout Troop. Four other fraternity members attend each troop meeting - each week. Leading these groups involves registering the troops with their councils, and planning and leading Troop meetings and activities. This year badges have been completed for Jewelry, Musician, Appearance, Plants, First Aid, and Citizenship. In addition they have learned basic scouting skills such as tying knots. The members of the Fraternity have amassed close to 150 service hours working with the children.

Circle K International

Circle K International is a youth organization sponsored by the Kiwanis International and is built on the pillars of service, leadership and fellowship. With an active membership of approximately 50 members, NCSU’s chapter of Circle K completed 1400 hours of service over the last year. Some of the many organizations they have helped include the Wake County Animal Shelter, Raleigh Rehabilitation Center, Carnivore Preservation Trust, the Tammy Lynn Center for Developmental Disabilities, the Ronald McDonald House, and the Food Bank of North Carolina. This year, Circle K also committed to a special project in which they supported the Victory Junction Gang Camp. This camp is fully equipped with a medical facility and is for children with chronic illnesses and their families. They raised over $1000 toward the sponsorship of a cabin. Lastly I share with you that they recently received the Club Achievement Award the highest award given to a Circle K International chapter.

Habitat For Humanity

Habitat for Humanity possesses a focused and clear goal—their motto is “Hammering away to give humanity a place to stay.” Habitat strives to educate students, staff and the greater community about substandard housing issues and to literally make a difference. Each Saturday the chapter works at a local Wake County site and spends Tuesdays tutoring children of Habitat homeowners. In addition they hold campus wide and community wide fundraisers including the annual campus Shack-a-thon, Habifest, and a 5K run to generate money to sponsor houses in the Wake County area. This chapter has raised over $16,000 this year towards this sponsorship goal. The chapter has over 100 active members, and accumulates over 13,000 hours of service annually.

Kevin L. Johnson

Kevin Johnson is a senior in Mechanical Engineering and hopes to work in the field of medicine upon graduation. Kevin has volunteered at the Carolina Children’s Clinic for several years. The Carolina Children’s Clinic serves women and children residing in the Salvation Army’s homeless shelter. This past year, he has not only volunteered in the clinic, but also served as the coordinator of all of the volunteers. Kevin leads the group to work with children with developmental issues by assisting with homework, administering the Denver Developmental test, and through developmental play. Kevin has strived to create trusting relationships with children have behavioral problems; self esteem issues and who don’t trust easily. To maintain these relationships, Kevin continues to volunteer at the clinic even during school holidays. Additionally, Kevin also volunteers at the Emergency Department at Rex Hospital. He has volunteered over 170 hours of his time at Rex. Kevin received 3 separate nomination letters that spoke volumes about his dedication and heart for service. One of Kevin nominator’s wrote: “Kevin impresses me with his humbleness and genuine character? where he finds the time to do these activities in addition to attend school and work, I do not know. I do know (though) that I and everyone else at the clinic are so thankful that he does.”
