| This past spring break, Campus Crusade sponsored a team of students to New Orleans for Hurricane Katrina relief work. When I say a “team of students” - I should probably explain to you that this was group of 230 students – who all traveled on their own to St. Bernard Parrish in Chalmette, Louisiana, which is in southeast New Orleans. The 230 Campus Crusade volunteers spent 4 days gutting out houses. These houses had been under approximately 30 feet of water for about 2 weeks. In the slide presentation earlier you saw photos of exactly where they were as this was the same sight I took 15 students. Campus Crusade volunteers dealt with unbelievable filth, worked hard to clear houses down to the studs and cement slab, and maintained a positive attitude. More homes were cleaned up that week with teams like Campus Crusades than had been cleaned in the last 6 months. Upon return to campus, Campus Crusade saw that this trip sparked a new vision for service with organizations closer to home. On a weekly basis, Alpha Phi Omega spends time with students aged 10 – 14 years at the Governor Morehead School for the Blind. Two members of the fraternity serve as leaders for each Girl & Boy Scout Troop. Four other fraternity members attend each troop meeting - each week. Leading these groups involves registering the troops with their councils, leading weekly Troop meetings and redesigning all activities so that blind participants can complete and earn scout badges. Some of the badges and projects completed this year are Jewelry, Musician, Appearance, Cooking, First Aid, Bird Houses and Flower Pots. In addition they have learned basic scouting skills such as tying knots. The members of the Fraternity have amassed close to 150 service hours working with the children and are currently beginning a Venture Crew for 13-21 year olds open to anyone in Wake County. |

During the 2005-2006 school year, Alpha Phi Omega completed over 3,200 hours of service with 35 active members and 15 pledges. APO averages 3 – 5 service events a week so that members can all have a weekly volunteer or service experience. As you heard earlier, each week they sponsor Girl & Boy Scout troops at the Governor Morehead School for the Blind. Additionally each week they also volunteer with the SPCA in Garner and the English Conversation Club at NC State. Additionally they participate in the Adopt-A-Highway program, volunteer several times a semester at Carnivore Preservation Trust, and chop and deliver wood with Warmth for Wake during the winter months. They also participate in numerous campus 1 time service projects like Chuck it Recycling at football games, Service NC State and Service Raleigh. |

| SATELLITE (Science and Technology Enriching Lifelong Leadership in Tomorrow's Endeavors) is a non-profit organization run by NC State students. Their purpose is to introduce students from rural, under-funded North Carolina high schools to science and technology as well as related career paths through a 5-day camp on NC State's campus each May. Approximately 40 high school sophomores are selected to experience a wide array of demonstrations, lectures, and hands-on laboratory experiments - all with the assistance of professors and current NC state students. This group began 10 years ago in 1996 and now boasts an active membership of 30 members. The NC state students spend the entire academic year working in 3 committees and are led by 2 co-directors. These students publicize the camp, create and distribute applications, run a selection process and improve the camp based on the previous years evaluations. Their toughest task is to raise the approximately $10,000 needed, each year, to fund the camp. This allows the participants to come for free. Additionally they plan all of the educational programs, secure lecturers and presenters, plan team builders. They also spend twenty-four hours a day for the entire 5-day camp as they work as counselors and on site supervisors during the experience. Their nominator wrote, “The goals of this program are to educate these scholars about the endless possibilities that exist with the fields of science and technology and to inspire them to reach out with their communities and involve others in their love of learning. The five days of SATELLITE are intensive, yet indescribably and infinitely rewarding. “ |

Victoria Pruitt - Victoria has been an active student leader this year by participating in the Emerging Leaders program this year and by pursuing her Visionary Leaders Certificate. What really sparked our interest in her was her passion and dedication as a participant in the AmeriCorps scholarship program we administer “NC-ACTS” … which stands for North Carolina Activating Citizenship Through Service”. Victoria will soon complete 300 hours of service to earn this $1,000 educational award. She volunteers with Hunter Elementary School, the Kentwood Learning program and serves as a big sister in the Campus Pals program, a partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Triangle. Additionally she has sought to become a better volunteer by attending the NC Service & Volunteerism Student Leadership Conference this past year. In addition to her service involvement, Victoria is an active member of the Women In Science and Engineering living and learning program, the Pre-Health Club and the Zoology Club. |
