Description: Note takers simply take notes in a class or lab and give the notes to the student at the end of each class. Knowledge of the subject area is necessary for technical and science classes. Typists type for a student with a hearing disability during lectures. Typists should be able to accurately key the content of the lecture so that the student can read what is being said in class as it is happening. A good typing speed (45+ words per minute) is necessary, as is the ability to listen while typing. Assistants work one on one with a student to accomplish tasks with which the student has difficulty due to his or her disability. In labs, this often means taking measurements, jotting down notes and manipulating objects (pouring chemicals, weighing items, etc.) Proctors act as a monitor and assistant (reads, and scribes for students as needed) for the testing of students. This is done at the Disability Services Office on a non-regular basis. DSO mainatains a ListServe to notify volunteers of upcoming opportunities. Please contact us for more information.
