Position: Volunteer
Description: The Alliance Medical Ministry's sole mission is to provide affordable healthcare to low-income, uninsured working families in the greater Raleigh, NC area. It was founded by members of the First United Methodist Church in Cary, NC, and receives support from philanthropic individuals and foundations, businesses and the community. There are several opportunities to volunteer: 1. Child care – child care nurturers needed to care for “well” children who accompany their parents to the clinic; 2. Patient receptionists – to check in and schedule patients for follow up visits, visits with medical/dental specialists, visits for laboratory and radiological tests; to determine patient eligibility and general patient needs; 3. Phlebotomists and laboratory technicians – to draw blood; to run simple laboratory tests; to prepare and package laboratory specimens for laboratory service providers conducting complex laboratory analysis; 4. Office assistants – to assist with patient record processing, computerized and paper file; to assist with paperwork for acquiring medicines prescribed by the medical staff; to manage inventory of medical and dental supplies; 5. Pharmacists and Pharmacy technicians – to assist with the paperwork for acquiring prescribed medicines and to counsel patients; to manage inventory of donated sample medicines; 6. Nurses, nursing assistants, dental hygienists, dental assistants – to assist medical and dental staff in direct patient care; to interview patients as to health history and status; to make follow-up contact with patients as to health improvement. 7. Physicians and Dentists – to provide direct patient care that otherwise cannot be met by the paid staff; 8. Social workers, psychologists, Stephen ministers – to provide counseling and encouragement to patients 9. Computer system maintenance – to provide needed computer systems maintenance; 10. Building and grounds maintenance – to maintain the facilities; 11. Office equipment maintenance –to maintain copiers, faxes and other office equipment; 12. Patient transportation –to drive patients (and their families) who need transportation to and from the clinic, for appointments with medical or dental sub-specialists, for appointments for laboratory or radiological services.
