REGISTER
Service NC State is a one-time community service program for incoming freshman
as well as interested returning NC State students. Students
meet as a large group and are then transported, or walk, to different service
sites. Impressions from past participating students
and service sites are available. The 2004 event
saw 250 students and staff volunteer with 15 service projects. The event was
a great success.
The 3rd annual Service NC State will take place on August 20,
2005.
Goals
- To meet other new NCSU students.
- To expose new NCSU students to the needs in our community.
- To facilitate strong citizenship and character in NCSU students.
- To learn about volunteer opportunities in Wake County.
What Will I Do?
Here are some of the projects that students did the last two years:
- Hunter Elementary School volunteers painted the alphabet
and numbers down the length of the kindergarten hallway.
- Habitat for Humanity ReUse Center volunteers sorted donations
that are then sold to the public. Funds then pay for Habitat for Humanity
worksite supplies.
- Interfaith Food Shuttle volunteers assisted with “gleaning”
donated food items from area restaurants and grocery stores and assisted in
delivering groceries to area shut-ins and shelters.
- Passage Home volunteers completed a computer project.
- Morning Side Assisted Living volunteers visited elderly
residents in the morning and played bingo after lunch.
- Haven House for Boys & Girls volunteers worked on a
landscaping project at each of these group homes.
- Fuller Elementary School & Washington Elementary school
volunteers mulched and landscaped courtyard and parking lot flower beds.
Whom Will I Be With?
Each group of 10 students will be lead by an NCSU student leader that has volunteered
to coordinate your group. The rest of your team will be made up of new and returning
NCSU students.
Schedule
The schedule for the day will be as follows:
- 12:00 Noon—Volunteer check-in
- 12:15 PM—Orientation
- 12:30 PM—Meeting with your group leader
- 12:30 - 1:15 PM —Travel to service site (Several
shuttles will transport student to sites)
- 1:00 - 4:00 PM or 1:15 to 4:15 PM —Service
- 4:00 - 4:30 PM—Reflection/evaluation of your experience
- 4:30 - 5:00 PM—Return to campus
Reminders
- Wear comfortable clothes—t-shirt and shorts or jeans recommended.
- Please wear appropriate clothes—no tank tops or “short shorts.”
- No open-toed shoes—tennis shoes are strongly recommended
- Bring sunscreen and a hat if you are sun-sensitive
- Please eat lunch before you come.
- Water will be provided.
