Initiatives

Office for Diversity and African American Affairs
Announces its
Major Initiatives for 2004-2005!

New Diversity at NC State web site

OVPDAAA has developed a website that will be one-stop shopping for all things relating to diversity at NC State.  This website will better serve students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends with up to date information of diversity demographics, events, research, planning, education and training, and other campus diversity resources.  The website was developed by Mr. Luis Chacon and is scheduled to be launched on 1 November 2004.  It will be maintained by the Office for Diversity and African American Affairs.

1st Annual Black Alumni Conference

OVPDAAA is aggressively seeking external funding in support of this initiative to host a two-day conference that brings African American Students, Faculty, and Alumni together at NC State University during Pan African Week in 2005.  This conference will celebrate the achievements of Black alumni and will promote how Black alumni can continue to serve NC State students, faculty, and alumni in the future.  This is a collaborative effort between the NC State Alumni Association, the Black Alumni Society, and the OVPDAAA.

Diversity Assessment

OVPDAAA will complete its review and analysis of the student responses to the Diversity Climate Survey.  In addition, the results will be shared with the broader campus community in several ways including the website, reports to the colleges, Dialogue on Diversity, and in student media.  In cooperation with UPA and the Faculty Senate, the OVPDAAA seeks to implement a faculty climate survey sometime this academic year.

Diversity Accountability

OVPDAAA will seek to review and enhance diversity accountability procedures for faculty and staff.  In cooperation with the Vice Chancellor for Human Resources and the Senior Vice Provost, the OVPDAAA will seek to revise employee hiring documents, work plans, and annual performance review procedures to increase individual and organizational accountability for promoting the goal of a more diverse and inclusive campus.

Faculty Diversity Education and Training

As a result of last spring’s Dialogue on Diversity, the OVPDAAA will seek to collaborate with faculty, college Diversity Coordinators, and the Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning to develop faculty diversity workshops to help faculty teach in a diverse classroom and to improve the climate in academic departments for faculty diversity.  Also being explored is the development of an on-line/on-demand Diversity Education Institute for students, faculty, and staff.

Changing the Landscape of Society: African American Creative Genius

The African American Cultural Center in cooperation with the campus Colleges is sponsoring a series of lectures by African American scientists, publishers, and engineers who have changed the landscape of society through their contributions to the science, business, and the social fabric of America.  The first lecturer, Mr. Frank L Mathews, is the co-founder and publisher of Black Issues in Higher Education.

Rethinking Student Diversity Plan

The Assistant Vice Provost for Student Diversity has introduced the Rethinking Student Diversity Plan. This plan seeks the involvement of representatives from student organizations. It serves as a communication-training tool to promote honest and informed conversations about diversity among students. This program was developed to enhance student’s educational experience by encouraging an appreciation for individual and group differences. It also promotes self-examination, personal growth, and preparation for interaction within a diverse and inclusive college environment.
