DIVERSITY INITIATIVES
Diversity Orientation Symposiums ($40,000 per year) - This
grant, annual gift, or endowed fund will pay for new student orientations
focused on helping students (primarily minority students, but also
encourages majority white students) understand the unique challenges
and provide support programs of minority students enrolled at a
majority white campuses.
Faculty Diversity Recruitment Symposium ($10,000 per year) - Provides
annual funds to bring promising graduate students to NC State for
faculty orientations and faculty job interviews.
NC State Diversity Festival ($10,000 per year) - A one
day festival in the Spring semester that invites NC State student
and community groups to gather at NC State University to offer
music, dance, food, and information to the broader community about
their culture/programs. Donated funds will pay for logistical/security/overhead
requirements and a small stipend to help defray the cost to groups
who participate.
Faculty Diversity Workshops ($50,000 per year) - This fund
would provide resources to conduct faculty workshops on diversity
and teaching in a diverse classroom. Funds would pay for instructional
materials, guest speakers, venue rentals, etc.
NC State Distinguished Lecture Series on Diversity ($50,000
per year) - In collaboration with a college, the Office of
Diversity and AAA would present a nationally or internationally
recognized speaker to present an evening lecture. Donor funds
would pay for the speaker's travel, honorarium, gift, pre-lecture
dinner with invited guests and post-lecture reception for invited
guest.
NC University System Conference on Diversity ($40,000
per year)- NC State hosts a conference and invites a team
of representatives from every college/university in NC. Teams
made up of students, faculty, and administrators from every college/university
in NC will be invited to attend a two day conference in the Spring
to discuss Diversity in NC colleges and universities. In addition
to research presentations, keynote speakers, and socials, various
forums will be provided for the exchange of ideas, creation of
partnerships, and cooperative initiatives on diversity.
NC High School Diversity Leadership Conference ($25,000 per
year) - This conference invites 50 -75 students from local
NC high schools to attend workshops at NC State focused on providing
the students with life skills (college applications, career opportunities,
diversity, drug and alcohol education, human sexuality, etc.). The
workshops will be presented by NC State students. NC State
students will be mentored by volunteer NC State faculty and staff. Funding
would pay for a t-shirt, lunch, a small stipend for the NC state
faculty who mentor the students, and cost of materials.
North Carolina College Student Conference on Diversity ($100,000
per year) - Invites 50 college students from universities
and colleges across NC State to attend a two-day conference on
the diversity challenges in NC State. The conference challenges
students in small groups mentored by a NC State faculty, government/corporate
leaders, and university staff volunteers to discuss and offer
solutions to a current state, national or international problem
related to diversity. Fund pays for student and mentor's meals,
accommodations, a keynote speaker, conference proceedings, etc.
Diversity Convocation ($20,000 per year)- This fund
would allow NC State to hold a diversity convocation for all students
at NC State as part of weekend welcome activities before the start
of classes every fall semester. Students would be bused to the
RBC Center (home of Wolfpack basketball). Every student would
be given a NC State Achieve t-shirt when they arrive. Students
would be welcomed to campus for the start of a new academic year
by the Chancellor. Following performances by the NC State Marching
Band and various student groups, the Chancellor would introduce
a notable guest speaker who will talk about the University goal
of an inclusive and diverse campus. Following the talk on diversity,
the students would be invited to form the letters NCSU on the basketball
court. The funds would also pay for student transportation, refreshments,
security and other related expenses.
Diversity Post-Doctoral Studies Fellows Program ($200,000
per year) - This fund would invite two or three recent doctoral
students to come to NC State University to conduct research and
teach in a diversity related area within one of the colleges. The
fund would pay the Fellow's salary and provide additional funds
for research, travel, etc. This program would include partnership
with (additional funds provided by) a college or department at
NC State University.
NC State Diversity Fellowship Program - ($10,000,000 endowment) Forty
to fifty outstanding NC State University freshmen of diverse backgrounds
(including, but not limited to, ethnic, cultural, gender, religious,
sexual orientation, socio-economic diversity) would be selected
to become NC State University Diversity Fellows. The Diversity
Fellows program would offer scholarship money ($3,000 per year
for up to three years) and a three-year co-curricular program of
diversity activities and learning experiences designed to promote
and enhance the Fellows exposure to campus, state, and national,
and international issues related to diversity.
AFRICAN AMERICAN INITIATIVES
African American Graduate Students Spring Banquet ($20,000
per year) - This is a gala banquet that celebrates the academic
achievements of both graduate and undergraduate African American
students at NC State. This endowed fund (or corporate sponsorship)
would pay for guest speaker fees/expenses, food, student recognition
plaques and certificates, advertisement, programs and related
expenses.
UNC System-Wide African American Graduate Student Research
Symposium ($20,000 per year) - This fund would support the
conduct of a graduate student research conference, which would
showcase the research of African American graduate students. The
fund would pay for keynote speaker fee/expenses, luncheon, venue
fees, student research awards/prizes, conference journal and
other conference related expenses.
Grant or Endowment for the Nubian Message (African American
Student Newspaper) ($250,000 endowment) - This fund
would help augment staff salaries, faculty advisor stipend, and
help pay for operating cost.
