Diversity and
African American Affairs
2003-2004 Accomplishments!
Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Brown versus Board
of Education.
This past year the OVPDAAA in cooperation with the African American
Culture Center participated in a year-long celebration of the 50th Anniversary
of Brown vs. Board of Education. Two major initiatives related to
the 50th Anniversary of Brown versus Board of Education
were conducted this year. First, the African American Cultural Center
succeeded in developing and executing a year-long series of outstanding
programs related to Brown versus Board of Education that was extremely
successful in educating and engaging the broader campus community. Second,
North Carolina State University partnered with Duke, North Carolina
Central University, and UNC-Chapel Hill to plan, develop and implement
a celebration of Brown versus Board of Education across the research
triangle community.
Two Dialogues on Diversity and Bernice King speaks at MLK Celebration.
The fall Dialogue on Diversity introduced the new Vice Provost for
Diversity and the spring dialogue on diversity brought of two hundred
faculty, student, and staff together to talk about the challenges
of diversity education and training at NCSU. Bernice King, youngest
daughter of the slain civil rights leader, delivered a motivational
and inspiring tribute to the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
on January 15th 2004.
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered (LGBT) Committee.
The OVPDAAA helped
establish a LBGT subcommittee of the Diversity Advisory Council. This is
the first campus-wide committee to examine, study, and recommend initiatives
and
programs to make campus more welcoming for the LBGT community. Promoting Hispanic/Latino Affairs.
The OVPDAAA increased
its activities in support of Hispanic/Latino Affairs and Lesbian,
Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered Affairs (LBGT). The OVPDAAA has
established partnerships with several Hispanic/Latino organizations
both on and off-campus to enhance the campus climate for Hispanic/Latino
students and to better prepare the campus for the anticipated increase
in Hispanic/Latino students over the next two decades. Efforts to Increase Diversity Funding.
To increase funding
for the OVPDAAA, we have made progress in three areas: corporate
and gift giving for diversity programs; hired a diversity grant
writer to work in the Proposal Development Unit; and partnered with
NCSU
research scientist to write diversity plans for two NSF grant proposals
submitted for external funding. Furthermore, grant proposals to
fund a new faculty recruitment program and another to fund a Diversity
Research Conference for graduate students were submitted to NSF in
collaboration with the Graduate School.
Student Diversity Assessment
In cooperation with the Office of University Planning and Analysis
and the Diversity Advisory Council, the OVPDAAA successfully developed
and implemented a student diversity climate survey. The data is
currently being catalogued and analyzed. On October 12th,
Dr. Jose Picart will report some of the results from the survey in
a campus Dialogue on Diversity.
