History of Earth Day at NC State

Earth Day has been celebrated on the NC State Campus for many years. The events as we know them today began in earnest in 2003, with the first Brickyard celebration and continues today with 2009's theme being the Energy Fair.

The Brickyard event traditionally has a wide variety of vendors featuring environmental information, as well as, food, music, games, art and awards. Participation in Earth Day has included NCSU student groups and campus departments as well as K-12 children, local businesses, non-profit organizations, local governments, and state agencies.

In 2008, Earth Day was expanded to Earth Week; a full week of events that included multiple Brickyard events, panels of experts, speakers, sustainable tours of campus, environmental movies, local art events and dining events. This was all in addition to the traditional brickyard Earth Day celebration. Earth Week 2008 was a grand success and through collaborative involvement, was able to heighten the campus community’s awareness about the environment and our impact upon the Earth.

2009 plans to be just as informative and fun as the previous years! New games have been added and a collection of local, state and campus organizations will be involved once again this year!
