The PIER System
PIER is a software system that streamlines the process of communicating, from drafting and collaboration to approvals, distribution and stakeholder questions. It integrates all the functions necessary to communicate, eliminating manual processes, multiple software programs, and third-party support services (such as web posting). In short, PIER removes bottlenecks that prevent open, timely communication.
PIER is web-based and secure. This means UNC users can access the system from anywhere, yet still operate as If everyone were in the same room. The system is hosted by AudienceCentral in redundant data centers, which means communication can continue even if UNC Infrastructure is compromised. (This occurred during Hurricane Katrina, when the Coast Guard's New Orleans operations center was flooded.)
