Starts at NC State. Ends up helping the world.

Long before anyone gave much thought to economic development, NC State was turning knowledge into practical, usable results for the citizens, businesses and communities of our state. A culture of creativity and innovation is evident throughout NC State and the university's accomplished entrepreneurial tradition. In fact, NC State has launched over 65 companies and holds more than 500 active patents. All told, over 13,000 jobs have been created through these spinoffs, with more to come from Centennial Campus' incubator companies.

John F. Norris Jr. attended North Carolina State University on a football scholarship (offensive center 67-70) and graduated with a B.S. degree in Nuclear Engineering in 1971. After serving 10 years as an officer and fighter pilot in the U.S. Air Force, he joined Duke Power Company in 1982 as an Assistant Engineer, progressing to Engineering Manager by 1988. He became President and CEO of Duke Engineering & Services in 1989 and held this position until 1998 when he was named Senior Vice President of Duke Energy Corporation and Chairman and CEO of Duke Energy Global Asset Development. In 1999 Mr. Norris left Duke Energy to become President and COO of the American Bureau of Shipping Group before joining American Electric Power (AEP) as Senior Vice President, Operations and Technical Services, which included responsibility for the operation of all of AEP's non-nuclear wholesale assets. Mr. Norris left AEP in 2003 to become a consultant to companies in energy-related industries, including Fuel Tech, where he became an Executive Consultant in April 2005 and was named President and CEO in February 2006.

Mr. Norris has served on the Board of Directors of a number of companies and not-for-profit organizations, including the North Carolina Zoological Society (Chairman 1996-1998) and his current role on the Board of Advisors to the Department of Nuclear Engineering at North Carolina State University. Mr. Norris is a registered professional engineer in Ohio, North Carolina and Alabama. He is also a member of the American Nuclear Society and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Fuel Tech is a fully integrated company providing a broad array of technologically advanced solutions to meet the pollution control, efficiency improvement, and operational optimization needs of energy-related facilities worldwide. In 2007, the company was ranked 12th in the Fortune Small Business list of America's 100 fastest growing small public companies, and featured on the cover of the July/August issue of the magazine.

About Entrepreneurs’ Lecture Series

The Entrepreneurs’ Lecture Series, developed by the Office of Public Affairs, is designed to showcase outstanding innovation and entrepreneurship among NC State alumni and partners. The lecture series is co-sponsored by the Engineering Entrepreneurs Program (EEP), started in 1993 by Dr. Tom Miller, professor of electrical and computer engineering, to help prepare undergraduate engineering students for the world of technology entrepreneurship. EEP students work in teams organized as “virtual start-up” companies, and research, design, build, test and demonstrate to business professionals their new products and business ideas.
