NC BelltowerThe core of Encore’s programming is its six-week courses on a variety of subjects. Encore also offers twice-monthly lectures (colloquia) on general interest topics, and these are included in the price of membership. Encore’s study trips, and special events take members on-site to locations in the Triangle and beyond for experiential learning. Encore’s special interest groups are member-run extracurricular groups.

Movie Groups

Movie TicketsThe Encore Movie Group organizes a monthly afternoon lunch and movie. The Encore Arts and Entertainment group organizes outings to local theatre and other events. These are completely member-organized activities. If you would like to be kept informed of these events via our email distribution list, please contact the office. You must be an Encore member to participate.

Writers Group

The Encore Writers Group is not a class; it’s a group of interested Encore members who gather informally. Are you (or do you want to be) a writer? Join us! We provide fascinating reading, lively discussion, constructive feedback, and a series of deadlines to keep you productive. We currently have about ten members, and we welcome anyone who would like to join us. The group meets at noon on the first Monday of every month in room 232 of the McKimmon Center. You must be an Encore member to participate. The group is facilitated by Dr. David Covington, Associate Professor of English at NCSU.

Distance Education

Distance learning opportunities include videotapes of select Encore courses and outreach presentations at area retirement communities and senior centers.

Encore members may check out previously-taped courses from Encore's video library, as well as shorter general interest videotapes on topics related to aging. Members may call or stop by the office to check on availability. Rental is $20 per taped course (unless you were enrolled in the course) and you must be an Encore member.

Click Here for a list of video courses that are available for rent.

Retirement Communities & Senior Centers may also rent these videotapes for use in their programming and should contact the Encore office for more information. As part of its outreach mission, Encore also organizes 2-3 lectures annually for Triangle-area residents who find it difficult to come to the McKimmon Center because of physical or logistical limitations. The one-hour general interest lecture (on topics such as history or music) is given at the senior center or retirement community, and provides a sample of Encore programming. Contact the Encore office for a list of potential speakers and topics and to arrange dates and times.

Cooperating Raleigh Colleges Program

The Cooperating Raleigh Colleges Program (CRC) is a voluntary organization comprised of NC State University, Meredith College, Peace College, St. Augustine's College, St. Mary's School and Shaw University for the purpose of developing and conducting cooperative educational activities. CRC broadcasts previously-taped Encore courses. Click Here (pdf) to see the latest schedule.
