The
Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) & NC State University
The ADA is
a federal law enacted in 1990 that prohibits discrimination against
individuals with disabilities in employment, public accommodations,
state and local government operations, transportation, and telecommunications.
The intent of this legislation is to permit persons with disabilities "to
boldly go where everyone else has gone before."
As
a public entity, North Carolina State University has an obligation
under ADA to ensure that there is no discrimination against a
qualified individual with a disability in services, programs or
activities provided by the University. NC State takes seriously
its obligation to accommodate the known disabilities of its faculty,
staff, and students and is progressing to make the campus a place
where all can learn and work in a barrier-free environment. Dr.
Cheryl Branker,
Associate Vice Provost and
Director of Disability Services,
is available to answer questions at 919-513-3768, or at the Student
Health Center, Suite 1900.
Under the ADA, it is unlawful to discriminate in employment against
individuals with disabilities, or to refuse to accommodate the
known disability of an otherwise qualified individual, unless to
do so causes undue hardship. Human Resources at NC State offers
faculty and staff opportunities for training designed to familiarize
them with the ADA and issues involving the employment of persons
with disabilities. The Office for Equal Opportunity can also provide
customized training on request. If you would like more information
or to schedule a workshop, contact Joanne Woodard.
The
ADA requires that NC State services, programs and activities
be accessible to persons with disabilities; for example, the
establishment
of telephone relay services for individuals who use teletypewriters
(TTY) or similar devices. See Accommodation
Resources for information
about TTY and other services available at NC State.
NC State faculty, staff, and students with ADA-related questions,
concerns, and grievances should contact the Vice Provost for Equal Opportunity and Equity, Joanne Woodard, for assistance or send email to the ADA
Hotline. There
are no separate procedures for handling ADA-related grievances;
the ADA Coordinator will work to channel grievances through established
University procedures for faculty, staff, and students. |
