Speech-to-Speech

Speech-to-Speech (STS) provides communications assistants (CA’s) for people who experience difficulty being understood by the public on the telephone. STS is provided through the TTY relay in each state. Unlike TTY, STS enables people with speech disabilities to communicate by voice through a CA instead of typing. All of the CA’s are well-qualified and highly-trained in speech patterns and language recognition skills.

Dr. Bob Segalman of the California Department of Rehabilitation, who is living with cerebral palsy, has developed the concept of STS. To use STS, report problems, or to get more information, call 1-800-854-7784 and ask for Dr. Segalman. To speak with Dr. Segalman directly, call 1-916-263-8689, or email him.
