Tips for Classroom Teachers on How to Help ELLs
The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning at Stony Brook University has developed a web site to help mainstream classroom teachers understand what ELLs are going through and to provide concrete advice on how best to help students and make the classroom experience a rewarding one for both student and teacher.  Topics include cultural awareness issues, commonly encountered challenges, maintaining a student's first language and strategies for promoting success in grades K-12.  This careful look at the needs of ELLs can be a particulary useful resource for classroom teachers who have had little experience with students whose first language is not English. It may also aid ESL teachers who are called upon to advise their colleagues about the specific needs of Ells.
