The Carolina
Teachers' Connection and LEARN NC will sponsor a workshop for alumni classroom
teachers and their colleagues, to enrich their understanding of English
as a Second Language (ESL) students and strengthen their teaching of these
students. The intent is to provide a forum to gather resources and ideas
so that teachers will be better equipped to help ESL students succeed in
N.C. schools. Speakers will include Dr. Darla Deardoff of Duke University,
Dr. Bobby Hobgood of UNC's LEARN NC, and Joanne Marino and Ivanna Thrower
of the N.C. Dept. of Public Instruction.

An educational
conference, organized by the North Carolina Society of Hispanic Professionals
(NCSHP), in partnership with Meredith College and the North Carolina Department
of Public Instruction. The conference objectives are: 1) to empower education
leaders and teachers with a better knowledge of the Hispanic student population
and the factors that interfere with their educational performance; 2) to
learn methods and practices that help Hispanic students overcome barriers
to academic success.
Featured speakers are Dr. Yvonne Freeman, a professor of bilingual education,
and Dr. David Freeman, a professor of reading and ESL at The University
of Texas at Brownsville. Both are interested in literacy education for
English language learners.

focuses on Improving the Tricks of the Trade. Highlights include

Development in ELLs, and even a Friday night costume ball!
