Family & Consumer Issues

Department of Family and Consumer Sciences

Our mission is to improve the well-being of the family through programs that educate, influence public policy, and help families put research-based knowledge to work in their lives.

Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program

Nutrition education program for limited-resource families and youth eligible for WIC and other federal food supplement programs.

North Carolina Cooperative Extension

The foundation of our society is the family. Many of Extension's programs provide families with research-based answers to their day-to-day challenges. Extension is ready with answers on controlling household insects, protecting well-water, managing a family budget, helping families improve their eating habits or dealing with the special concerns related to early childhood, parenting or aging.

North Carolina Family-Centered Meetings Project

The North Carolina Family-Centered Meetings Project develops, delivers and evaluates training on family involvement in child welfare decision-making. This training on "family-centered meetings" is provided to those North Carolinia counties that are participating in the Multiple Response System initiative.

North Carolina Senior Games

Artistic and athletic competitions to encourage health and wellness in people 55 and better. North Carolina Senior Games (NCSG) involves over 55,000 adults ages 55+ in year round programs in all counties in the state. Competitions are held in 50 athletic events and four "Silver Arts" areas—visual arts, literary arts, performing arts and heritage arts. Through 53 local Senior Games, about 3,000 participants qualify for the State Finals in Raleigh. About 200 undergraduate and graduate students from the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management volunteer each year to help with the state finals.

NCSG originated in 1982 in response to a request from the NC Division of Aging, and the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management became an original coordinating agency. The program has emerged as a model Senior Games program for the nation. Participants report increasing physical activity, improving nutritional patterns, strengthening social networks, improving their quality of life and motivating them to be more active.
