Gateway Counties Pilot Program

The Gateways Counties Pilot Program is an initiative
of Extension and Engagement. Designed to fulfill the vision of the Engaged University, it seeks to encourage communities throughout North Carolina to look to the resources of NCSU to provide technical assistance and assist them to resolve complex issues in all fields.
Twelve counties have been chosen for the pilot program: Cumberland, Currituck, Dare, Forsyth, Gaston, Haywood, Lenoir, Martin, Mecklenburg, Pamlico, Transylvania and Wake, representing a geographically dispersed cross section of conditions found in the state. Working through the local offices of the Cooperative Extension Service, Counties have begun to identify issues and projects affecting them, and to work with NCSU faculty and staff to develop responses to them through directed research, professional advice and student projects. These projects have been identified by Extension staff working with local officials, non-profits and other organizations serving the public.

All departments and colleges of the University are participants in the program. Special programs for students have also been established, including Honors courses and internships focusing on local issues.
