Journals

Action Research

  • An international, interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed journal that is a forum for the development of the theory and practice of action research and for participative, action oriented inquiry into questions relevant to people in the conduct of their lives. Publishes articles on community-based and participatory research.

Australasian Journal of University Community Engagement

  • Australasian journal of university community engagement was selected for preservation by the National Library of Australia. This title is scheduled to be re-archived regularly. The publisher's sties may provide more current information.

Change: The Magazine of Higher Learning

  • Published in cooperation with The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, Change focuses on contemporary issues in higher learning. Using a magazine format, Change is intended to inform reflective practitioners in colleges, universities, corporations, government, and elsewhere about trends, new ideas, and the implications of educational programs, policies, and practices.

Collaborative Anthropologies

  • Collaborative Anthropologies is a journal meant to engage the growing and ever-widening discussion of collaborative research and practice in anthropology and in closely related fields. Published annually.

Community Development Journal

  • The Community Development Journal provides an international forum for political, economic and social programs, which link the activities of people with institutions and government. Dealing with the theory and practice of the policies, programs and methods employed, the Community Development Journal covers a wide range of topics including community action, village, town, and regional planning, community studies and rural development.

Community Works Journal

  • Community Works Journal is published by Community Works Institute in support of teaching practices that build community. The Journal features essays and reflections along with curriculum overviews that highlight the importance of place, service, and sustainability to a relevant and meaningful education.

Context Journal

  • A student-run, online, peer-reviewed journal that highlights the exceptional work of health students in the community and recognizes insightful, well-designed evaluations of student-initiated programs.


Education, Citizenship and Social Justice

  • Provides a strategic forum for international and multidisciplinary dialogue for all academic educators and educational policy-makers concerned with the meanings and form of citizenship and social justice.

Gateways: International Journal of Community Research and Engagement

  • Gateways is a refereed journal concerned with the practice and processes of community research and other forms of engagement. It provides a forum for academics, practitioners and community representatives to pursue issues and reflect on practices related to interactions between institutions and communities and community initiatives.

Information for Action—A Journal on Service-Learning Research with Children and Youth

  • Articles are welcomed from three audiences: academic researchers who wish to report on current research efforts dealing with some aspect of service-learning (including teacher preparation), teachers and other practitioners who wish to share their studies and reflections on service-learning implementation that integrates theory with practice, and article /reports by youth on research / evaluation initiatives that add something new to the service-learning literature.

Innovative Higher Education

The goals of Innovative Higher Education are:

  • To present descriptions and evaluations of innovations and provocative new ideas with relevance for action beyond the immediate context in higher education;
  • To focus on the effect of such innovations on teaching and students;
  • To be open to diverse forms of scholarship and research methods by maintaining flexibility in the selection of topics deemed appropriate for the journal; and
  • To strike a balance between practice and theory by presenting manuscripts in a readable and scholarly manner to both faculty and administrators in the academic community.

International Journal for Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

  • International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning is an open, peer-reviewed, international electronic journal published twice a year by the Center for Excellence in Teaching at Georgia Southern University to be an international vehicle for articles, essays, and discussions about the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) and its applications in higher/tertiary education today. All submissions undergo a double-blind peer-review process.


International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education

  • International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education provides a forum for the dissemination of knowledge focused on the improvement of higher education across all content areas and delivery domains. The audience of the IJTLHE includes higher education faculty, staff, administrators, researchers, and students who are interested in improving post-secondary instruction.


Inventio

  • Inventio is a project of the Division of Instructional and Technology Support Services (DoIT) at George Mason University. It features peer-reviewed articles on instructional research, instructional philosophy, pedagogy, learning theory, and other significant issues related to excellence in learning and teaching. In addition to these feature articles, inventio also includes shorter articles on classroom practice and response and dialog sections about issues raised in the feature articles.


Journal for Civic Commitment

  • Twice-yearly, online journal dedicated to service learning and civic engagement, published by the Community College National Center for Community Engagement.

Journal of Cognitive Affective Learning

  • Journal of Cognitive Affective Learning is a peer-reviewed journal dedicated to disseminating research on holistic educational practices that focus on the significance of the cognitive-affective relationship in promoting deep and enduring learning. Access to the journal (articles and services) is free of charge. JCAL publishes theoretical papers, original research reports, literature reviews, and extended reviews of selected books.


Journal of Extension

  • The Journal of Extension (JOE) expands and updates the research and knowledge base for U.S. Extension professionals and other outreach educators to improve their effectiveness. JOE also serves as a forum for emerging and contemporary issues affecting U.S. Cooperative Extension education.

Journal of Higher Education Outreach and Engagement

The Journal of Higher Education Outreach and Engagement is a peer-reviewed publication committed to

  • serving as a forum to promote the continuing dialogue about the service and outreach mission of the university; and
  • fostering an understanding of how the service and outreach mission relates to the university's teaching and research missions as well as the needs of the sponsoring society.

Journal of Public Participation

  • The ‘IJP2’ is an on-line, multi-disciplinary forum for the exchange of information among researchers, practitioners, decision-makers, and citizens about public participation and its impact around the world.  It has been created with the specific intention of bridging the arenas of research and practice within the field of public participation.

Journal of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

  • The Journal of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning encourages all instructors to engage in the discussion of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), and to become involved in the sharing of knowledge and learning about the teaching-learning process. The Journal provides a publication outlet for research in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, and an on-line forum for engagement with the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.


Journal of Social Change

  • The Journal of Social Change Sponsored by Walden University, JSC is an on-line, refereed journal, published semi-annually, and devoted to theories and applied research on social change that improves the human condition and progresses people, groups, organizations, cultures, and society towards a more positive future.


Journal of Youth Development ~ Bridging Research and Practice

  • A multidisciplinary applied research and practice refereed online journal that focuses on the development of school-aged youth through the transition to adulthood (ages 6-22)

Journal on Excellence in College Teaching

  • Journal on Excellence in College Teaching is a peer-reviewed journal published at Miami University by and for faculty at universities and two- and four-year colleges to increase student learning through effective teaching, interest in and enthusiasm for the profession of teaching, and communication among faculty about their classroom experiences. It answers Ernest Boyer’s call for a forum to present the scholarship of teaching and learning. The Journal provides a scholarly, written forum for discussion by faculty about all areas affecting teaching and learning, and gives faculty the opportunity to share proven, innovative pedagogies and thoughtful, inspirational insights about teaching.


Metropolitan Universities Journal (IUPUI)

  • Metropolitan Universities Journal is a quarterly publication intent on helping your institution stay abreast of cutting-edge topics in higher education. Published by Indiana University- Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) on behalf of the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities, each the med issue reports in-depth on theoretical and applied aspects affecting colleges and universities.

Michigan Journal of Community Service Learning

  • The Michigan Journal of Community Service Learning (MJCSL) has been the premiere national, peer-reviewed journal publishing articles written by faculty and service-learning educators on research, theory, pedagogy, and other issues related to academic (curriculum-based) service-learning in higher education.

Partnerships: A Journal of Service-Learning & Civic Engagement

  • The articles in this peer-reviewed journal focus on how theories and practices can inform and improve such partnerships, connections, and collaborations. Studies co-authored by faculty, students, and/or community partners; or examining practices across disciplines or campuses; or exploring international networks are all encouraged.

Progress in Community Health Partnerships: Research, Education, and Action

  • Facilitates dissemination of programs that use community partnerships to improve public health, to promote progress in the methods of research and education involving community health partnerships, and to stimulate action that will improve the health of people in communities. Dedicated to supporting the work of community health partnerships that involve ongoing collaboration between community representatives and academic or governmental partners.

Science Education and Civic Engagement: An International Journal

  • Explores constructive connections between science education and civic engagement. It focuses on using unsolved, complex civic issues as a framework to develop students’ understanding of the role of scientific knowledge in personal and public decision making. Published articles include topical reviews, research studies on teaching and learning, and connections between science education and public policy. Published by the National Center for Science and Civic Engagement.

The American Journal of Community Psychology

  • The American Journal of Community Psychology offers quantitative and qualitative research on community psychological interventions at the social, neighborhood, organizational, group, and individual levels. Wide-ranging topics include individual and community mental and physical health; educational, legal, and work environment processes, policies, and opportunities; social welfare and social justice; studies of social problems; and evaluations of interventions.


The American Sociologist

  • The American Sociologist examines the history, current status, and future prospects of sociology as a profession and discipline. TAS emphasizes new trends in the profession and focuses on how sociologists shape and influence social policy and the intellectual issues of the age. It also publishes professional opinions, special features, interviews, and review essays, with emphasis on the global context and impact of the sociological discipline.


The International Journal of Volunteer Administration

  • The International Journal of Volunteer Administration (IJOVA) is a peer-reviewed applied research publication that seeks to connect community-based practitioners, academicians, and consultants in greater service to the global volunteer community. The Journal is a refereed publication of the Department of 4-H Youth Development and Family & Consumer Sciences at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC, USA, and provides for an exchange of ideas and sharing of knowledge and insights about volunteerism, and volunteer resource management and administration, both in North America and internationally.

The Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education

  • Introducing The Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education is a new on-line, refereed journal examining perspectives, research, and practices of community engagement and community-based learning in higher education.

The Journal of Community Engagement and Scholarship

  • The Journal of Community Engagement and Scholarship provides a mechanism for faculty, staff, students, and community partners to disseminate scholarly works from all academic disciplines with the goal of integrating teaching, research, and community engagement.

Journals That Feature Articles on Service-Learning and/or Community Engagement

JOE is a refereed journal. Feature, Research in Brief, and Ideas at Work submissions undergo double-blind review, and Commentary and Tools of the Trade submissions are reviewed by the editor, Dr. Laura Hoelscher.

The acceptance rate for articles submitted to JOE is currently 32.4%.
