On March 28, 2006, university officials broke ground on the Carmichael Recreation Center, a fitness facility designed specifically for recreational use by gym members.
The three-story recreational center is comprised of more than 42,000 square feet of space, with an entire floor dedicated to the use of all new cardio training equipment. One floor houses four fitness rooms, including one room outfitted for yoga and pilates classes, and the ground floor features a Port City Java and a conference room. The $12 million project concludes construction in the Fall of 2007.
“The real advantage to the new facility is that it’s completely dedicated to recreational use, so members won’t have to compete with physical education classes for these resources,” says Dawn Sanner, director of Carmichael Gym. “With the new space, we’ll be able to expand our group fitness programming, as well as offer services like massage therapists and personal trainers – basically, we’ll be able to give our members a state-of-the-art fitness experience.”
