History

Facilities Division Landscape Construction Services (LCS) was involved with the landscape of The Point from the beginning stages of planning and early construction. LCS worked closely with the Office of the University Architect (OUA) and Design & Construction Services (DCS) designing a formalized and functional landscape plan for the Chancellor's Residence. They considered various factors in the design such as formal vs. naturalized plantings, proximity to the lake, natural habitat, viewsheds, storm water drainage, and parking on site vs. off site.

They carefully selected and planted a combination of native and ornamental plantings to create and define smaller spaces within the landscape as a whole. Plant choices were based on size and scale, deer resistance, seasonal interest, and growing/flowering cycles, and maintenance requirements.

They installed boulders into the perimeter slopes facing the lake to slow the flow of water from rain events as well as to act a bridge from formal to natural surroundings. Two large planting beds flanked in cobblestone were designed and installed by LCS at the entrance of the property to add welcoming color to the gateway. Structural engineered soil was installed under areas of turf, shrubs, ornamental and shade trees in the front of the house to allow for additional parking spaces without adding additional pavement.

LCS and Grounds Management also worked with student groups, OUA, DCS and the Raulston Arboretum staff to develop, design and install plants in raised stationary planters in the rear of the house and pots in the front of the house.

The Professional Grounds Management Society bestowed the 2013 Green Star Honor Award to North Carolina State University for the finished landscape project.
