History

Lee Residence Hall is a multi-story modern structure housing participants in the North Carolina Teaching Fellows program. The building is named after a man known as "Father of the Airborne," General Major William Carey Lee (1895-1948).

Lee enlisted in the army in 1917 to eventually become first commanding General of the 101st Airborne parachute troops. He is remembered at NC State particularly for his influence as a professor of ROTC military science. Lee earned his B.S. from the University in 1936 and, in 1945, NC State awarded him an honorary doctorate of military science. His decorations and awards include the Distinguished Service Medal; World War I Victory Medal, with claps for the Meuse-Argonne; Army of Germany Medal; World War II Victory Medal; America Defense Service Medal; American Campaign Medal; and the European, African, and Middle Eastern ribbons.
