Patterson attended the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, only to find that after one year it was closed in the aftermath of the Civil War. He worked as a bookkeeper for a time in his brother's business and then returned to the family farm. Afterwards, his career as a political leader began. Four times, he was elected to the State Senate as Commissioner of Agriculture despite the Fusion Party's attempts at his removal. His name is listed among the distinguished Moreheads and Pattersons found in the arcade of the Chapel Hill bell tower.
