History

Located on the eastern side of North Campus at NC State, this severe three-story brick structure was the sixth residence hall on the campus. The building's name honors a 1902 graduate of NC State, Cleveland Welch (1882-1937).

Although Welch had wanted to study textiles, he was two years early for the program; instead, he chose electrical engineering. During his undergraduate years, Welch excelled in arts and athletics, starring in football, track, baseball, the glee club, and the dramatic club. After graduation, he served as basketball coach for two years. As the expanding textiles industry brought about increased opportunities, Welch joined the Loray Cotton Mills in 1905. In 1910, he joined the Cramerton Mills, as vice president a position he held for the remainder of his career.
