A completed postage charge form is required for all private contractor mail services.
FOLDING
Several types of folds are available. A request for folding copied
or printed matter should be forwarded to the Mail
Services Supervisor who is responsible for coordinating with
a private contractor for this service.
INSERTION (ENVELOPE STUFFING)
The insertion of correspondence, reprints and other printed matter into
pre-addressed or window envelopes (in excess of 100 pieces) is available
by private contractor.
SEALING
Automatic sealing of standard size gummed envelopes, with flap located at the top of the envelope
is provided for by Mail Services when applying postage.
For envelopes requiring sealing, leave the flaps open, nested into each other, and secured with an
elastic band. Forwarded to Mail Services in this manner, the envelopes are directly moved to the
sealing and metering machine.
TABS, WAFER SEALS, TAPE, AND GLUE
Tabs, wafer seals, cellophane tape, or permanent glue(continuous or spot)
may be used as applicable to the particular type of mailpiece if the sealing
devices do not interfere with the recognition of the barcode, rate marking,
postage information, delivery or return addresses. In all cases,
additional tabs or seals may be used.
PACKAGING
Good, rigid, used boxes with all flaps intact are acceptable. If a box of
the desired size cannot be found, a larger one may be cut down. Bend the
four sides over the articles which have been cushioned in the box and
close and band. Boxes with difficult loads to out-of-town destinations
must be reinforced with banding about every 8 inches in each of the two
directions around the package.
Outside Wraps for Boxes. It is preferable that paper wrappers be omitted,
if the box itself constitutes an adequate shipping container. However,
wrapping paper equivalent to a regular large grocery bag, 60-pound basis
weight, may be used as an outside cover for boxes. Closure and
reinforcement should be made by the use of package-sealing tape. Scotch
tape and masking tape are not strong enough to withstand the stress
encountered in shipping. See Exhibit Outside Wraps for Boxes.
Parcels Exceeding Size or Weight Limits. Parcels exceeding 70 pounds
or 108 inches (when length and girth are added together) are not mailable
through the Postal Service. See Exhibit How to Compute the Size of a Parcel.
