Anastasios A. “Butch” Tsiatis will serve as the first Gertrude M. Cox Distinguished Professor of Statistics.
A faculty member since 1997, Tsiatis is known for biostatistics research, particularly in survival analysis, clinical trials, surrogate markers, cost of care and quality of life. He has obtained major grant funding from the National Institutes of Health, published more than 120 papers and given more than 150 invited seminars. He also serves as an adjunct professor with Duke University and a member of the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of North Carolina.
Tsiatis, co-editor of the journal Biostatistics, is a fellow of the American Statistical Association and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics. He earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley.
Donations from alumnus J. Stuart Hunter, who earned a doctorate in statistics from NC State in 1954, made the endowment for the Cox professorship possible.
