4. Comments by Provost Arden
Provost Arden welcomed Joseph Hice as the new Associate Vice Chancellor and Chief Communications Officer.
Provost Arden voiced his concern about a number of students still going to classes sick because they don’t want to miss class or get behind. He stated that this a time for increased faculty flexibility and that with over 500 cases on campus it is going to get worse before it gets better.
Provost Arden explained that he would like to discuss the differences between the data provided by GA and the data from him and the Chancellor over the last month or so. He handed out a budget cut spreadsheet and explained that the discussion is important not because it is going to make any difference to the amount of available money in our current budget, but in the spirit of full transparency and making sure that the faculty understand where these numbers come from, and how and why they vary.
Jeanette Moore from Animal Science expressed concern that an Environmental Science major will be administered by the Office of the Provost and DUAP without the usual curriculum oversight by academic units. Provost Arden agreed that the issue is a valid concern and should be discussed. He stated that he and the Chancellor feel that in general academic degrees belong in academic units.
Past Chair Martin is concerned with a discussion by GA to look at graduation rates as a means to deal with university base funding. He thinks it is a bad idea that is getting a lot of press.6. Adjournment
