Celebration of Teaching and Learning – FCTL and the Graduate School Honor Excellence in Teaching
On April 16, 2008, the Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning and the Graduate School recognized outstanding faculty members and graduate students who have received teaching awards this year. Nearly 100 colleagues, friends, and family members attended the ice cream social to celebrate NC State’s commitment to teaching excellence.
Provost Larry Nielsen explained, “NC State is committed to excellence in teaching. We often forget to think about all of the behind-the-scenes preparations it takes to plan for class, grade papers, set up the lab equipment, practice lectures, design engaging learning experiences, and continually advise and mentor our students.” The Celebration honored and recognized the dedication and commitment required to become excellent teachers.
The event centered on three types of teaching awards. NC State recognized 18 faculty members for receiving the Outstanding Teacher Award this year. Dr. John Ambrose, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Academic Programs, explained that this is one of the oldest, most respected teaching awards for NC State faculty. Faculty members must be nominated and selected by both peers and students. Upon receiving this recognition, these faculty members are now part of the Academy of Outstanding Teachers for as long as they remain at NC State.
Another important part of the Celebration was taking time to recognize graduate students who have teaching responsibilities. Provost Nielsen commented, “Graduate Teaching Assistants are part of this commitment to excellence, and by providing programs and resources, we recognize the importance of focusing on the development of our graduate students and highlighting the importance of what they do for our university.”
Dr. Terri Lomax, Dean of the Graduate School, explained the importance of offering training, support, and professional development opportunities for graduate students who teach at NC State. Dean Lomax recognized 30 students who have successfully completed the Certificate of Accomplishment in Teaching program and honored 23 students who successfully completed the Preparing the Professoriate program. Both of these programs are part of the Graduate School’s Preparing Future Leaders initiative, designed to offer training, support, and professional development experiences for graduate students.
