Dr. Maxine Atkinson Wins Hans O. Mauksch Award

Maxine Atkinson, Professor of Sociology and Direction of  NC State’s First Year Inquiry Program has been awarded the American Sociological Association’s Hans O. Mauksch Award.  This award honors outstanding contributions to undergraduate teaching in sociology.  The award recognizes contributions that have made a significant impact on the manner in which sociology is taught at a regional, state, national, and international level. These contributions include preparation of teaching- and curriculum-related materials and publications, participation in the scholarship of teaching and learning, development and communication of innovative teaching techniques, leadership in teaching-related workshops and symposia, involvement in innovative program development, and contributions to the enhancement of teaching within state, regional, and national associations. The award is given for a series of contributions spanning  an entire career that transcends a single institution, impacting the quality of teaching nationally in a significant way.  The award was instituted in 1978 and has been presented annually since 1979 by the Section on Teaching and Learning of the American Sociological Association.

As President of the Southern Sociological Society in 1999-2000,  Atkinson  focused attention on the scholarship of teaching and learning with a presidential address called “The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning: Reconceptualizing Scholarship and Transforming the Academy” (Social Forces 2001). Professor Atkinson has published and presented widely on issues related to teaching, often with graduate students, providing evidence of her commitment to mentoring the next generations of teachers of sociology. She is a member of the Departmental Resources Group (DRG) and STLS Council; she began a second term on the editorial board of Teaching Sociology in 2006.

Our congratulations go to Dr. Atkinson!
