Bright Ideas - Down With the Gown
NC State is working to solve a nearly century-old problem – what to do with those skimpy, derriere-exposing hospital gowns.
Anyone who's ever worn a traditional hospital gown knows they can be a bit well, airy. At NC State, students and faculty in the College of Textiles are hard at work on a new gown design – one that’s just as easy for medical personnel to work around, but one that’ll also stay in place when the wind blows.
"The fact is, when patients are in a hospital they are already feeling vulnerable," said Dr. Traci Lamar, associate professor of textile and apparel technology and management at NC State. "The last thing they need to deal with is a garment that intensifies that feeling by leaving them uncovered and overexposed."
From fibers to finished products, we’re making real breakthroughs in textile design at NC State.
In this case, it’s simple – we know that if patients don’t have to worry about "southern exposure," they're more apt to get moving, get healthy and get back to making a difference in the world.
