The Scoop: It's an examination of western musical materials, forms, styles and history in which students learn how to listen perceptively, how music is organized and how to create a composition.
Interesting Assignment: This class is aimed at those with no formal musical training or experience. But by the end of the class, students will compose and perform a piece. Seem impossible? Keep reading.
A New Song: Students sometimes perform their compositions with unconventional instruments, like their bodies or wine glasses. One student performed his music by striking a farm cultivator with a hammer, metal rod and chain.
