Reich to Speak at Millennium Seminar Series

We knew that Robert Reich would have observations that would re-focus our attention on some of the crucial issues of public policy and economics that shape the future of the United States.

Former U.S. Secretary of Labor Robert Reich will speak at North Carolina State University's Millennium Seminar Series at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 31, in Stewart Theater. The event is free and open to NC State University students, faculty and staff as well as the general public.

"Robert Reich is always a thought-provoking and exciting speaker," said Mary P. Easley, first lady of North Carolina and a senior lecturer at NC State who coordinates the university's Millennium Seminar series. "The audience will be enlightened, challenged and entertained by his presentation.

"It is one of those 'not-to-be-missed' NC State events, and we're pleased to partner with the Harrelson Committee, Phi Kappa Phi, and the Park Scholarships Program to make his visit possible."

Reich - a professor of public policy at the Goldman School of Public Policy at the University of California at Berkeley - will focus on the rising economic powers of China and India and what effect they have on the United States.

"While other stories have dominated the headlines over the last few years, the state of America's economy and the effectiveness of our government to cope with intense economic competition from the rapidly developing economies or China, India, and Russia has been simmering and has now emerged as the issue we should have been paying attention to all along," Easley said.

Reich has served in three administrations, most recently as secretary of labor under President Bill Clinton. In 2003, he was awarded the prestigious Vaclav Havel Foundation Prize, by the former Czech president, for his pioneering work in economic and social thought.

"We knew that Robert Reich would have observations that would re-focus our attention on some of the crucial issues of public policy and economics that shape the future of the United States, and that's why he was an obvious choice to be a Millennium Seminar speaker," Easley said.

He has written 11 books, including The Work of Nations, which has been translated into 22 languages; the best-sellers Reason, The Future of Success and Locked in the Cabinet, and his most recent book, Supercapitalism: The Transformation of Business, Democracy, and Everyday Life.

Beginning January 31, 2008 at 2 p.m., Supercapitalism will be on sale in the second floor lobby of Talley Student Center. At the conclusion of Thursday's lecture, Reich will be available to inscribe books (no other autographs, please) until 5:30 p.m. Students and visitors alike must have a major credit card to purchase Supercapitalism - campus ID cards will not be sufficient.

The Millennium Seminar series provides opportunities for students to interact with world leaders from diverse backgrounds. Presentations address world issues from the speaker's perspective, placing local and national events in a global context. The seminars are designed to engage, encourage and inspire students to reach beyond borders and think more globally about what they have learned, and what their role will be as they move into the workforce.

"Millennium has developed into a top flight speaker series," Easley said. "If you want internationally recognized experts, high profile speakers, and intelligent discussion of the most important issues of our time,  the Millennium Seminar series should be on your radar screen."
