Features for January, 2011

Cashing In

New York City taxis can empty your pockets, but on Discovery Channel's hit game show Cash Cab, riders get paid. Behind the scenes, the knowledge and skills Greg Volk ('03) gained as an NC State student have paid off in the form of job satisfaction - and a pair of Emmy awards - as he comes up with questions to test contestants' recall of history and current events.

All Hail the King

On Jan. 21, eleven of the College of Engineering's most talented students sang, danced and unicycled their way across the Stewart Theatre stage in a quest to become 'Mr. Engineer,' all while raising money for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.

A Presidential Pat on the Back

Robert Allen, a graduate of an NC Solar Center training program was thrust into the international spotlight during President Obama's State of the Union address Tuesday, thanks to his success in reinventing his family's struggling roofing business through the emphasis of solar roofing and energy conservation products and services.

At Your Service

Senior engineering major Justin Boucher (right) didn't spend Spring Break 2010 toting beach chairs and downing frosty beverages. Instead, he joined a group of classmates on an Alternative Spring Break trip to Nicaragua, where he transformed cinderblocks, bags of mortar and wheelbarrows of dirt into sinks, showers and washing stations for needy local residents.

Family Ties

Having already possessed strong familial connections to the university, Nick Giron said his decision to attend NC State was an easy one. But while the senior business administration major says he came to Raleigh in part to build upon family tradition, he's been hard at work making his own mark on campus.

Road Scholars

Senior criminology major Timur Ender will lead a group of students on a cross-country bike trip this summer, in order to lend a hand to affordable-housing projects sponsored by Habitat for Humanity and similar organizations.

In the Spotlight

Less than a year ago, Adrienne Core ('10) was student teaching, putting the final touches on an undergraduate degree in secondary math education. On Saturday, she took center stage at the internationally broadcast Miss America pageant, competing for more than $200,000 in scholarship money while helping to raise awareness for the V Foundation for Cancer Research.

Serving Through Art and Design

When Shelley Smith graduates in May, she'll leave NC State with more than a degree. The Caldwell Fellow has gained valuable (and challenging) experience building an art program for at-risk youth during her time on campus.

Excellence and Affordability Equal One Red-Hot Deal

Despite an unsettled economy and rising costs in the world around us, NC State continues to offer an affordable, high-quality education to current and future students alike - a philosophy not lost on Kiplinger finance experts, who have named NC State the nation's 15th-best value out of more than 500 public universities.

Student Media Makes Headlines

2010 was a banner year for NC State's newspaper, radio, yearbook and literary magazine student staffs, which racked up a bevy of national awards for their efforts. In addition, Windhover - NC State's literary and visual arts magazine - and the Agromeck yearbook have been named finalists for 2011 Crown Awards.
