African Childhood Inspires Novel

Two African experiences — her own as the daughter of missionaries and another she discovered in a 19th-century diary — “A Different Sun: A Novel of Africa,” English professor Elaine Orr’s first novel. Fiction was a new challenge for Orr, whose previous publications included a memoir and a pair of academic works.

Exploring the Magic of ‘Life After Life’

New York Times bestselling novelist and short fiction writer Jill McCorkle, a professor of English in NC State’s creative writing program, just published “Life After Life,” her first novel in 17 years. “It was a long time coming,” McCorkle told the Bulletin.

Through his 50 Meals in 50 Days project, graduating design student Austin Simmons spent the summer of 2012 expanding his horizons, one meal and one country at a time.

Highest Honor

Seniors Emily Tucker, Josh Privette, Mary Charles Hale and Andy Walsh received the Mathews Medal, the highest non-academic honor awarded to NC State students.

Overseas Immersion

Ph.D. students Suzanne O’Connell and Aaron Fox immersed themselves in Croatian agriculture, cuisine and culture as they explored study abroad options with the University of Zagreb’s Faculty of Agriculture.
