Figuring it Out

When sophomore Andie Mitchell heard about a late-breaking $750 tuition increase, she called financial aid for help. In two weeks, staff members recalculated grant, scholarship and loan information to help almost 8,000 Wolfpack students, including Mitchell, pay for school.

Memory Lane

Saturday's Live it Up! festivities celebrated improvements to Hillsborough Street, an overhaul that has made it easier than ever for students, faculty and staff to become more active in the local community. In honor of the big event, we pored through photos of yesteryear - look back with us to learn more about the history of one of the area's most important thoroughfares.

Video Visionaries

Armed with the latest gear and a passion for storytelling, advanced video students like senior communication major Will Lamb are able to gain hands-on experience in all aspects of the constantly evolving industry - and land solid internship and job offers as well.

Brickyard Bounty

The lure of ice cold watermelon, crisp apples and ripe tomatoes attracted a steady stream of customers to the season's first campus farmers market this week. The market - run by students - is open for business every Wednesday in the Brickyard, near D. H. Hill Library.

Living Legacy

Members of the Wolfpack family gathered at the new Coaches' Corner on Tuesday afternoon to remember the late Kay Yow and dedicate a bronze sculpture in her honor. The idea to memorialize Yow - NC State's women's basketball coach for 34 years - grew out of a student suggestion during campus elections.

Diving to New Heights

Karen Achtyl and Megan Bittner have secured a place in history after being named the first female Naval ROTC members selected for submarine duty. They credit their ROTC training, supportive faculty and the rigorous chemical engineering program at NC State for their accomplishment.

A Wolfpack Welcome

On Wednesday, Feb. 17, we welcomed Chancellor-elect W. Randolph Woodson and his wife, Susan, to the NC State family with a pep-band-fueled, high-energy celebratory event at Reynolds Coliseum. Dr. Woodson, who met hundreds of students, faculty, staff and alumni after the festivities, will officially join NC State as chancellor on April 5.

Homegrown Help for Haiti

For four years, NC State animal science professor Charlotte Farin has had a hand in feeding 1,400 Haitian schoolchildren who live within six miles of the epicenter of the recent earthquake. The farm she works with now serves as a humanitarian aid center for those suffering in the region.

Inspired to Give Back

Despite having toiled through a year filled with economic turmoil and uncertainty, NC State employees enter 2010 having pledged more than half a million dollars to the State Employees Combined Campaign, which supports charities and non-profit organizations across North Carolina. NC State led the state's large universities in employee participation and saw an increase of more than 100 faculty and staff members contributing to this year's campaign.

Roundabout Route

This fall, orange barrels, construction barriers and heavy equipment are delaying traffic on historic Hillsborough Street from the base of the Belltower to the D.H. Hill Library. When the dust settles on the $9.2 million city of Raleigh project in September 2010, project designers hope that traffic on Hillsborough will still be slower – although more free flowing – and safer for pedestrians and drivers alike, following the installation of two new roundabouts.
