U2’s much-anticipated appearance on campus Oct. 3 will not only mark the end of Carter-Finley Stadium’s 11-year hiatus from holding special events, it will also highlight NC State and U2 lead singer Bono’s shared passion for environmental issues while helping to bring more than 1,500 temporary jobs to workers in our community.
This fall, orange barrels, construction barriers and heavy equipment are delaying traffic on historic Hillsborough Street from the base of the Belltower to the D.H. Hill Library. When the dust settles on the $9.2 million city of Raleigh project in September 2010, project designers hope that traffic on Hillsborough will still be slower – although more free flowing – and safer for pedestrians and drivers alike, following the installation of two new roundabouts.
There’s an old African proverb that best-selling author Greg Mortenson, NC State’s 2009 convocation speaker, often quotes as the driving force behind his humanitarian efforts in Afghanistan and Pakistan: If you educate a boy, you educate an individual – if you educate a girl, you educate a community. It's a mindset shared by a group of NC State students who have implemented Mortenson's Pennies for Peace program on our campus in hopes of helping bring a shared philosophy of equality in education to children halfway around the world.
Going to a university with three times as many students as her hometown’s entire population meant a big change for Crystal Stroman. But after a 36-hour orientation to campus life – registering for classes, staying overnight in a residence hall, meeting faculty and staff, and making friends – she felt eager to join NC State’s largest-ever freshman class. "I’m more excited now than nervous," she said.
On any given day, it seems there's something exciting going on at NC State's Brickyard. Earth Day – April 22 – proved to be no different, as the landmark was the site for what student organizers hope will become a weekly series of Farmer's Market events – sales that will bring a variety of North Carolina-grown foods and products to students, faculty and staff members headed through Central Campus.
