Go Ahead, ‘Like’ Us

The recent re-launch of NC State's official Facebook page gives a big boost to the university's overall Web presence and an opportunity for social media-savvy students, staff, family and fans to connect with NC State on a whole new level.

Let’s Get Talking

A few months ago, the Oprah Winfrey network (OWN) and reality-TV producer Mark Burnett launched a national video campaign asking everyday people to share what they'd do with their own talk show. Entries poured in from around the world - including one from Kornelius Bascombe ('11), who has been named one of five "Your OWN Show" online finalists.

Head of the Class

Bob Larson is a man of many hats. A successful entrepreneur, renowned public-relations guru and a notoriously meticulous editor, it's his ability to cultivate an environment of creativity and mutual respect that most endears him to NC State communication students, who have voted him the department's top teacher eight times in the last decade.

Making an Impact

NC State makes a greater contribution to the Triangle's economy than any other local college or university, say respondents to online polling conducted by the Triangle Business Journal. Garnering 50% of the 1,424 votes, NC State easily distanced itself from second- and third-place finishers UNC-Chapel Hill (28%) and Duke University (15%).

Passing the Test

Who better to design a learning space than students? That was the thinking of Underwriters Laboratories executives, who worked with a quartet of NC State design students to imagine the interiors of the company's new education and training facility in Research Triangle Park.

The Revolution

Wedged into a series of small rooms on the third floor of Witherspoon Student Center, the entirely student-run WKNC 88.1 FM serves up an around-the-clock, steady mix of music - everything from punk and metal to rap and a cappella. It's a seriously successful formula that has earned 88.1 FM bragging rights as the Triangle's top station of its kind.

Rock Can Roll

In continuing NC State's mission to assist and serve those beyond the borders of our campus, Student Government, the Union Activities Board and WKNC 88.1 came together last week with a singular goal in mind - cranking up the volume to help a local food bank fight hunger across 34 North Carolina counties.

Leading Her Peers

Kelly Hook's election as student body president has been the driving force behind a positive shift in Student Government's ability to connect with the larger student body, as well as an improved relationship with campus administrators. For Hook, the sixth female president in SG history, the opportunity to give voice to her fellow students was one she couldn't pass up.

Before They Bite

The weather is heating up, and it's time for mosquitoes to reassume their position as some of the most high-maintenance, least-friendly outdoor party crashers around. But have no fear, Dr. Marian McCord and a team of students are on the case, looking to permanently ground the flying blood banks in ways that won't harm you - or your invited guests.

No Fear

Although no university had ever won the Urban Land Institute's national design competition on its first attempt, a team of grad students fielded by NC State had ideas of doing just that. And when the dust settled, the quintet's family-centered plan earned top honors, rising above 116 entries - including those from Ivy-League heavyweights Penn and Harvard.
